| Well TaxRevenue, I do not know about that. The Last Samarai was a good movie, but the modern Japaneese culture is bad |

I'm actually a Japanese immigrant (Kyoto prefecture), if that counts.

As someone from Japan, let me try my best to explain the suicide rate of Japan.
Disclaimer: This is all anecdotal, and my experience.
Rather than be your own independent self in a quest to change the world somehow, you're expected to be just another brick in the wall of society, and do your job. You don't really think about why, you just do it and work hard because that's what society expects you to do. It's kinda like communism, but I assure you that Japan is NOT communistic.
Yes, this applies to the children. Even in elementary school (yes, I have been to school in Japan), the amount of pressure you experience rivals that of my high school. Arrive at school around 7:30, leave school at 3, take part in some extracurricular activities like piano or violin or whatever, come home at around 5-6 PM, eat dinner, watch TV for about 30 minutes, and go to sleep. Rinse, repeat. And this is an elementary school student in Japan. And if your good friend got an A- on his test when you got a B+, the pressure's on for you to somehow match him, and get a better grade, no matter what. No, it's not "Dangit, my friend got a new Nintendo game, and now I'm one game behind him in his collection. I need to go to Gamestop.", but it's pretty similar to that, just with academic expectations.
So yeah, I guess it does make sense that Japanese academic system + Societal pressure = Kids swallowing broken glass and overdosing painkillers. |
