Note: NOT DONE YET! Will update when I finish more parts of story..
Name: Kotonaru Sarutobi (Kotonaru means "different" in japanese.) Overview: Kotonaru Sarutobi is a rare Kekkei Tōta. This means that he is an extremely rare ninja who was born with three different elemental natures: wind, water, and lightning. Although he is already naturally gifted, Kotonaru still trains daily to master his abilities to protect his friends and family. He posses fierce determination, although is rarely serious unless in a combat situation, in which he would show his strategic nature. Like his father Konohamaru, Kotonaru feels as if he is overshadowed by his own blood, and wants to prove that he tries just as hard as any other shinobi. Kotonaru tends to make jokes, whether corny or not, and is prone to making stupid mistakes. His nindō is to never give in and never back down, even if the odds are 100 to 1. He's still struggling with other's expectations for him, but is working through that and is destined to become one of the best ninja Konoha has ever known.
Prolouge to Story
Shizune, as usual, had a lot on her mind. Even after the end of the previous ninja war, their was still so much to be done and so little time. It didn't help that Hokage Naruto wasn't the most responsible person in the world, as he even tried to blow off work to sneak away with Hinata or train desperate academy students. Shizune glanced down at the pile of papers in her arms as she paced around the Hokage Mansion's hallways and stopped to sort them out Fan mail, fan mail, fan mail...Wait, what was this? She stared down at a plain white envelope stamped with a yellow smiley face. Konohamaru, no doubt. Only he would dare to send such an unofficial letter to the mansion. Shizune set the rest of the papers on the floor to open it. Easier to get it over with now than later. She gently pulled out a wrinkled piece of paper. The words were written in crude handwriting, but Shizune was just able to read it. Her hazel eyes widened, and she immediately began to sprint to Naruto's office, knocking over her documents in the process. Shizune's mind raced with thoughts jumping back and forth. This can't be happening! Not after we had finally begun to experience peace! "Naruto! Naruto!" Shizune stumbled into his office, nearly panting. "Naruto, you have to see this!" Naruto, fully dresses in his white robes and hood, smirked and rose up from his desk. "Come on Shizune, lighten up! You're always so up tight! I bet you wouldn't take the day off if I payed you to." "Oh would you just look at this?" Naruto took the paper from Shizune, then made a puzzled face and scratched his spiky blond hair. "Uh...I can't read it." Shizune crossed her arms. "It's a letter from Konohamaru. He says his son has something...ah...special." Naruto knew what she was suggesting, but instead of donning a surprised expression, simply laughed, much to Shizune's annoyance. "What's so funny?" Naruto gave her an, 'are you kidding me' smile. "It's obviously another one of his pranks. Unbelievable. Even with a kid he still has time to pull a practical joke!" Shizune calmed down a bit. "Alright, I'll take your word for it. I guess I just overreacted a--hey, what's that?" Shizune took back the letter and flipped to the other side, then made a strange squealing sound. "What?" asked Naruto. "What is it?" Shizune silently showed Naruto the back of the paper. Taped to it was a special piece of paper made from a tree filled with chakra used to determine someone's elemental nature. It reacted different to each one. If it burned, their nature was fire. If it dampened, water, and so on. But this paper was damp, ripped in half, and wrinkled. That could only mean one thing... "Well Shizune, it looks like we have a new kekkai tota in the Hidden Leaf."
Chapter One: Genin Exam
12 year old Kotonaru Sarutobi jumped from building to building, anxiously trying to get to his class. His navy blue shirt and cargo pants made him seem like a colored blur to the villagers, who occasionally turned around and scratched their heads, and his jet-black hair ruffled as he went. If a villager did happen to see him pause to catch his breath, they would be looking at a tan skinned academy student with a determined face and slight smirk. The blazing sun in addition to the cool breeze made it a great day for everyone, whether it was shopping or sparring. For Kotonaru, it was a great day to take his first Genin exam. "Today's the day, today's the day!" Kotonaru thought as he bounded forward. "Genin rank, here I come!" Kotonaru closed his eyes for a brief second: Bad choice. His oak brown boots caught the edge of a roof, causing him to trip as gravity took him to the ground. He quickly recovered with a roll instead of falling, and continued his pursuit of the ninja academy. "Even future genin mistakes I guess," Kotonaru reassured to himself. After about a minute or two, Kotonaru finally saw his academy come up in his vision. "Almost there, almost there!" Kotonaru jumped off of one last rooftop and skidded to a stop in front of the entrance. He paused to dust himself off, check to make sure he had his ninja tools in his pouch, then headed on in. The familiar classroom with it's deep blue walls and wooden floors wasn't exactly a place you would easily forget. The floor rose at certain height for each desk, so everybody was visible. Hand signs were scribbled on the chalkboard. "Sorry I'm late," he said, facing the students. "I ran into a bit of traffic." Kotonaru motioned to put his hand behind head, but instead accidently elbowed a kid standing near him right in the face. He stumbled back, shocked, and fell on his hands. His spiky purple hair and fair skin made him really stand out. He wore ()w pants and a shirt that said, "I'm Beast". "Oh, shoot! Are you okay?" He cracked a smile. "Me? Oh yeah! I'm completely fine with some random show off walking in here like he owns the place and giving me what I'm guessing is a bruised jaw." "I could do without the sarcasm." "I could do with a fixed jaw." "Do you ever stop talking?!" "No, you?" "Nope." "Then this is going to take awhile." "That's enough of that." Kakashi Sensei stepped in between the two ticked off academy students. Kakashi still had his classic look from years ago, fully dressed in his jounin uniform and mask that covered his mouth and left eye. "Kotonaru, why don't you do us all a favor and take a seat." "Right. Oops," said Kotonaru as he sat down in his desk. Kakashi sighed. "As I was saying, this is our new transfer student from the Hidden Cloud, Rakurai. Rakurai here has already practiced in the academy back in the Hidden Cloud, so he'll be taking the genin exam with us." () proceeded to an empty seat in the front row. "Oh, that reminds me! During this genin exam we will be testing you on offensive ninjutsu." This caused everybody to nod in agreement, and Kotonaru was the one who was excited the most. He loved the feeling you got after landing a good ninjutsu on your opponent. Then again, who didn't? "Hang on, hang on! There's just one small catch. You'll be taking the genin exams with a partner." "WHAAAAAT?!" This caught everyone by surprise. Normally, the genin exams were taken individually. No one had prepared a strategy for taking it in pairs. As if that weren't bad enough, Kakashi told us HE was going to choose our partners. "I want to emphasize not only your strength, but your capability to work with others while still utilizing offensive ninjutsu. Now, here are your pairs. Pair one: Kotonaru and Rakurai." "Are you serious?" Rakurai exclaimed. "Really?!" Kotonaru complained. "Oh like you didn't see this coming, Mr. Kekkei Tota." "You did NOT just go there!" Kotonaru didn't always enjoy his abilities as a kekkei tota because, despite the fact they increased his ninjutsu power and made him a unique shinobi, they tended to discredit him. Most people thought that Kotonaru's strength came from his blood, when in reality, he did try to prove himself. And of all the Sensei's Kotonaru could get stuck with, it was the one with the stupid see-right-through-you sharingan. On his first day, in a matter of minutes, Kakashi had already known Kotonaru's strengths and weaknesses inside out. That's one thing Kotonaru didn't like about him: Kakashi never gave them a break. He was a non-negotiable shinobi, and some of the students had found that out the hard way. Kotonaru was one of them. "Yeah, I did," Kakashi replied cooly. "Now if you would be so kind, I'd like to continue the list of pairs." "Hmph." Kotonaru and Rakurai grumbled in unison. Soon, too soon, Kakashi had already partnered the others up and announced there would be a 15 minute practice interval with our partners. Kotonaru looked towards Rakurai, who was currently resting his head on his hand, a saddened expression on his face. Kotonaru knew that look; that same look had been on his face before. It showed dissapointment and hopelessness, all at once. Kotonaru guessed that he wasn't the only one that wanted to become a genin so desperately. Feeling a bit empathetic, Kotonaru walked over to where Rakurai was sitting and stood next to his desk. "Go away already," said Rakurai. "But I just got here." "Right. Now go away." Kotonaru sighed. This was going to be harder than he thought. "Listen. You don't like me, and I definately don't like you,-" "-way to start off a pep talk-" "but if we want to become genin, we're going to have to work together. Temporary truce?" Kotonaru stretched out his hand. Rakurai just stared at him, somewhat surprised. "For now, fine." Rakurai shook his hand. "Now let's hurry up before I regain my sanity." "Alright." Kotonaru replied. "So here's the plan..." *** "Kotonaru and Rakurai, you're up!" "Coming!" Kakashi had just called them into another, smaller room in the ninja academy. Sitting behind a small rectangular table were three of the senseis, each lounging on a wooden chair, Kakashi in the center. Kotonaru and Rakurai stood in front of them, and bowed. "Alright," said Kakashi. "You have two minutes to showcase any offensive ninjutsu against the dummy." He pointed behind them at a metal scarecrow with an angry smile drawn on it's head. "You may begin." The two young academy students made eye contact, and both broke into a small smile. Kotonaru flashed back to their earlier conversation. "First off, we need to wow them. Something flashy that doesn't require much chakra." Kotonaru had explained. "I think I have just the thing." Rakurai made three hand seals: Boar, Rat, and Tiger. "Lightning Style: Lightning Armor!" You know THAT jutsu? How? I'm from the cloud village, remember? Yeah, but still, it's got to be tough to learn. Well, it's not completely mastered... In the present, electrical energy started to crackle around Rakurai, but only covered his fist. "Eh, close enough." He told himself. Rakurai charged the dummy at super speed like a bull to red. The impact made the ground shift a little, and seemed to impress the senseis. "Not bad," Kakashi thought to himself. "Not bad at all." Rakurai gave Kotonaru the thumbs up to move on to the second part of their plan... "Now, to make sure we both pass, as a Kekkei Tota I need to come up with something that requires skill. They won't be impressed by just one strong ninjutsu from me." Kotonaru had said. Rakurai thought for a minute. "Who said you could only do one?" Kotonaru made three hands signs and clapped his hands together, then stopped to throw a shuriken at the dummy. Hurricane Style: Multi Phantom Shuriken Jutsu! The shuriken multiplied into many more and was surrounded by an icy, electrical chakra that was actually visible to the naked eye. "Now Wind Style: Jade Hurricane!" Keeping his hands locked in the hand seal, Kotonaru was able to control where the shurikens went. He made them pierce the metal dummy in each part of the body, from head to toe. "I see," Kakashi thought to himself once more. "He used a jutsu similar to the one Konohamaru learned from the Third Hokage and Asuma's technique that allowed him to control where it went. Not to mention Asuma's ability to fuse his elemental nature with a weapon. That shuriken must have been made of a special type of metal for Kotonaru to do that, no doubt. And he's only an academy student! Of course, he is a Kekkei Tota." Kotonaru and Rakurai made eye contact one last time, then proceeded onto the final part... To top it all off, we need to display teamwork. Kakashi is all about teamwork. So a combination ninjutsu? Precisely. Any ideas? Well, it has to be a big finish. Really, really big. Something that shows just how hard we've worked to get here. Actually, my grades aren't exactly great. You know what I mean! Hm...What's your strongest ninjutsu? It's a bit 'shocking'. And mine is sort of chilly. Wait a minute, that's perfect! Well don't leave me in the dark! What's the idea? Let's just say we'll blow the roof off this place... Both Kotonaru and Rakurai put their hands together in various hand signs, standing side by side. "Hurricane Style: Frozen Bolt Barrage!" Kotonaru shouted. "Lightning Style: Electric Sphere!" Rakurai yelled. Thunderbolt seemingly covered in ice rained down from the sky aimed at the dummy. They weren't very large, but still enough to make small holes in the cieling. Rakurai then jumped and charged the dummy with a ball levitating in his hands, covered in electrical chakra. That's went everything went wrong. Rakurai had gone too fast and missed the dummy, going right over the target. Instead, multiple frosty lightning bolts hit the sphere in Rakurai's hands. Kotonaru, who was standing nearby continuing to summon the bolts, stopped his jutsu and muttered something that sounded a lot like "baka". The ball in Rakurai's hands began to turn from yellow to red. "LOOK OUT, IT'S GONNA BLOW!" Rakurai had warned Kotonaru too late. The ball exploded, knocking both of them onto the table, sprawled out on their backs. Surprisingly, the explosion hadn't effected them in the least, whereas the two students were literally steaming. Kotonaru managed a smile. "So, did we pass?" Before they could answer, the Kotonaru and Rakurai lost consciousness and fell onto the floor.
