The wiki advises against local parts because they could be removed at any time. But will this ever actually happen? Will local parts get LocalService or something similar?
Discuss. |

| I doubt they'll ever be removed, but they definitely won't be expanded on. |

I remember a dev commenting on how they are a massive hack and when they do something or other to the physics engine they will break or something
something like that |

| Yup, it's not something that will be intentionally "removed" at some point, it's just that it relies on bugs that will likely eventually change when something else changes. |

| Are there any plans to officially implement these? |

| Nope, if anything there would be plans to officially remove it. I disagree, but the people in charge don't like local parts. |

| We should certainly be able to make objects that only exist to a certain client or just the server. :( |

No, you don't. You can make fancy graphical effects on certain clients but no local parts. Single player instances will be coming shortly.

Why should they be? There was a huge discussion on why they need to be in there but at the end even Mr.Brandonhare agreed that it was just because some features were missing. Not because its absolutely necessary. When the relevant features are introduced this will go away. Such as Single player instances, per client particle/graphical effects.

@Sorcus
Who were you replying to then and what question?
And by "Single player instances", will that include physical objects? |

There have actually been several discussions about removing local parts (it's easy enough to do that; just stop them from being parented to certain places). They're definitely not supported / intended, and can cause weirdness with the dPhysics engine.
However, the hack is used to supply functionality that our engine does not yet support. So I would want to remove local parts by removing the need for them rather than by merely preventing them.
So at least for now, none of the admins are working to remove the hack.

| Whats the point of hosting your own server? We've done this before and everyone's name is just Player... Its not fun. |

How about hosting a server that connects to ROBLOX to get userIds?
Or of course you could just make the server software downloadable. |

@kidnomor
They could do it like RBXPri, where you get a server window which monitors the server and a player window to actually play the game.
That would be useful for many things. |

I remember reading a book, although I don't remember the plot well, and in it there were several different dimensions. For instance, humans could only see on one dimension un-aided, while the "magical" creatures in the book could see several dimensions. Some creatures could view more dimensions that others.
I don't think the dimensions were all viewed at once, they had the ability to switch their view or something. And humans had to use some special glasses or something to view different dimensions I think.
Anyways, I always wanted to make something like that on Roblox because it is a really cool idea, but seeing as local parts could get removed at any time, and due to them being really hacky, I never did. And I stopped playing. |
