| Well how else do you expect to learn a language? I believe the tests aren't to test your knowledge, but to forcibly introduce you to new techniques. |

The group is meant for Beginners. The tests are to help you learn, not to prove you're superior. If you look up documentation to do the test, that hardly shows your progress. |

| Scripting isn't about memorizing loads of Roblox specific documentation. More computer science, less memory game! |

| You don't have to memorize science? I'd argue that science is almost all memory. |

| Science isn't well documented though. Don't memorize what you can easily look up. Plus, science will carry over to other fields. |

Let me correct myself:
More computer science, less memory game!
More computer science, less roblox-specific memory game! |

"Don't memorize what you can easily look up."
So I suppose I shouldn't bother learning anything since I can just look it up on Wikipedia? I don't need to learn math because I can just type my equation into google?
I'm afraid I must disagree with your opinion on the subject. |

| Don't play Devil's advocate, common knowledge is perfectly fine. Yes, learn math. No, don't learn to do equations ridiculously fast in your head, that's when you use google. |

An example of what I mean:
Name six common Roblox functions
should be more like
Name six common data structures |

| Even if you can also look up the data structures easily, they're much more worthwhile to know anyways. |

I disagree with you again. You'll make it much farther if you can do equations quickly in your head than you will if you rely on using google.
It's of course just an example, but wouldn't it be better to learn and memorize your API rather than having to search the wiki for what you want every time you need to do something? I'm not saying you should memorize the API in it's entirety, but in my opinion that learning it isn't worth the effort is a bad one. |

"anyone can look up documentation."
Knowing where to look and understanding the documentation when you find it is probably the single most important skill in general for programming. |

@fpga Learning is great and memorizing things you don't have to look up and state/do by yourself is wonderful. Learning is what makes life more enjoyable! |

| I use the wiki SO MUCH... when I'm working on sites I have php.net/manual open constantly. I spend my time learning how and when to properly use certain design patterns and data structures instead of remembering function names. |

"Don't memorize what you can easily look up."
You complain about being able to look things up and then you say that it's how it should be done.
What side are you on? |

| I guess I'm complaining that the site uses it to measure progress. It's how it should be done, but it has little to do with scripting. |

I'm not saying a calculator is bad, nor am I saying you should avoid using them. But I am saying there's a lot more you can do if you have a great understanding of math, which you cannot do without learning how to use it. Calculators aren't going to invent revolutionary algorithms, people who understand math will.
When learning something new, I too rely heavily on the documentation of the language, but there's no point to avoid memorizing it if you're going to use it more than once. |

@scar
If you really want to set beginners up for success, teach them the best practices that they'll use in their careers, don't silo them into a specific language's documentation. |
