| I'm designing one that is meant to launch a considerably heavier object, namely a sack of flour, and I don't think that hairspray will have enough kick. I want something I can get for not to much money and without breaking any laws. |

Use a rock that weighs as much as a potato.

I said fuel, not ammunition. Propane would be a bit hard to rig up and may not end well for my purposes. But maybe butane... |

I'd have to be really careful with the gasoline. The solid steel tube is to expensive for what I'm doing though. I was just going to fit a metal sleeve inside of a PVC tube. |

Gas in a plastic tube will explode and probably kill you. If you want something powerful, you're going to have to spend money. |

| As to pressurized air, I'd have to rig up a pretty fancy pressure chamber for that to be effective for a 4 inch diameter tube, I need to keep costs down, I only have so much cash to work with. |

| If you negotiate physics with a good enough base, You can use high-octane petrol to make a potato mortar. |

Gasoline also doesn't have strong enough explosive qualities in the quantities I'd be using. I could always extract the gunpowder from some of the old fireworks, of course that is a hard in itself. |

Again, that would work with the mortar design, but you would need a lot of powder. High-Octane fuel will do it. |

| With gunpowder, there is sill a high chance of serious injury or death. He is using a plastic tube, if it shatters and flies at him, bang, he's gone. |
