| Though I posted here mainly because there are a lot of intelligent users that actually can help me decide whether or not to switch. I know there are some things with linux that are not ideal for programming(Least that's what I have seen somebody post about in this board). I am thinking about Pinguy mainly because the UI is sharp. Any thoughts/things I should know about before switching my spare computer to linux? |

I'd recommend starting with Ubuntu, simply because it is the most popular distribution, which therefore makes it the best choice for beginners.
As for things on Linux that aren't ideal for programming, that's completely false. Linux is by far better than Windows for programming. It has a better command line, built-in development tools and many other things. |

| Ubunt has a tiny boot up time as well. A bit faster than Win 7 on an SSD. |

| Don't get yourself frustrated in the future, just stay with windows. All those dev tools you could download for windows. To me I would only get Linux on a computer I use strictly for programming. So if you play lots of games (Steam) don't get frustrated in the future if you can't play them with Wine :|. |

Yeah, but on Linux all the dev tools come preinstalled while on Windows you have to download all of them. Plus some Linux distros are so small they can be run entirely in RAM. And with live CDs you can save your work onto a USB, plug it into another computer, and continue working where you left off. Other than that, Linux can do everything Windows can do. Don't say it can't run games because that's not Linux's problem, the people who made the game couldn't be bothered to make it compatible with it.
Linux is awesome. 'Nuff said. |

They should crawl into a hole and breed.
I'd totally buy it. |

@all that are concerned about me gaming
This computer I am going to install the linux (Ubuntu I guess since it's user friendly) can barely run runescape so it'll be for programming and server hosting only. |

Ubuntu is great. Except there are things you can't download. It's like you're on a MAC, well technically.
