The growth of the gap between the rich and the poor doesn't really matter at all. That just means that the rich are earning more money than the poor, which is a sign of economic growth. Then you may as "What about the poor then". What really does matter though is get the road blocks out so any person can become rich or poor with ease.
How I see it, you should make the gap as long as possible, then if you get the road blocks out that makes your journey to becoming rich more adventured and more memorable. |

The flaw in this is that the rich, who control the road, don't want to remove the roadblocks.

droid, ask your self, is the rich really the road blocks? or is it government regulation. What you are talking about is Monopolies. Monopolies are one road block that can be created by both the rich and the government. It is the job of government get its foot out of the free market so it is harder for a monopoly to take over, but when there is a monopoly, then government has to break it down.
The rich as a whole are not the problem, in fact they are part of the solution. The rich invest their money into factories and such that will provide jobs to those who don't have one. Rather the real problem is the excess of government |

After a point, the gap begins to impede economic growth, since presumably there becomes a massive fissure between production and consumption.
And we all know where that leads.
However, it does also signify that there is little equality of opportunity, or not as much as there should be. WORK ON DEM PUBLIC GOODZ, GUVMENT! |

That's right! Kill the class which consumes and so builds a modern economy!
That's the sheer fallacy and idiocy of you'r beliefs, Pepper. |

@jbg The equality in an economy unless its equal opportunity. That is the role of government to provide the guard rails so everyone has an equal CHANCE in getting somewhere. Then the rest falls to you to take that chance.
Remember the man with the golden voice? he was in pure poverty and then grew rich over night because he took the initiative.

Basically what you suggest is that perfect community is Brazil.
Aka very few rich people and tons and tons of poor people.
Yeah seems legit. |

Becoming rich should not be a lottery, as your example is with the man with a golden voice, it should be a goal you cna work towards.
The onlything that has prevented becoming rich being a total lottery in usa is the information revolution, when this calms down, there will be few new millionaries |

| It would also matter less if the rich helped the poor (slightly) out. |

| Once again, the megagap does nothing. It just guarantees that very few ultra-rich people can still keep their positions and rule over the poor until next revolution, the poor have tiny to none chance to get rich in such communities and it isn't the goverment which causes this, it is the gap itself and the ultra-rich holding their positions that are causing it. |

| Of course, if they have the ability to become rich with the road blocks out, then it doesn't matter. |

No, because certain pillars of capitalism are unattainable, and globalization and shifting comparative advantages will leave vast swathes of poverty in their wakes. |
