I've been thinking about this for a while. Why not make it so a person can make a server/servers shut down after a certain time. I'll give you an example. Say someone like... HatHelper makes an update for The Conquerors. He doesn't want to shut down all the server because if someone was about to win and the game shuts down they rage. He also doesn't want a bunch of people going "UMG WHAT IS DER UPDATE" and "NO NEW SERVERS@!" etc. So, my suggestion is a script that you can put in, that allows you to shut down a server when you click a button, after a set of options.
So, let's say HH makes an update. He goes to the game configuration and click "Shut down server after..." There are multiple options. One is to do it after a certain amount of time. Say, 15 minutes.
Another option, in which the person has to script in to their game is to "Shut down after so and so happens" HH can then script it so he click the button under "Custom". (Should he make multiple ones, it would be Custom1, Custom2, etc.)
When he does that, all non-new servers, (this can be selected to certain ones), will shut down at a certain time. (This can be, say, when the round is over, or when there is no one left, etc.)
This is going to a rather large project, but worth it. It would save a lot of game makers a LOT of trouble of worrying when to update there games and such.
Post below. No trolling, "grammerar lesz fials", and no flying is permitted in the responces.

This is one of the most logical suggestions I've seen today. I like it, yes it may be a very large task, but it would definitely be worth it. Support. |

You can choose when to shutdown a certain server on your game, or multiple ones. When you make an update, it only goes to new servers. Example!
(3 servers are online) *Owner makes an update*' Those three servers wouldn't update, but any new servers after that WOULD be updated. This suggestion would allow the owner choose went to shut down a server, at a certain time.

Support! It's really annoying being in games with outdated servers, or games where the server shuts down when you are right about to do something.

Bumping this thread. I'm thinking of several ways we could use this. Quite a few ways... Give me more supports!

| One thing they could do is have a warning message pop up to those in the game. This would be especially helpful in roleplaying games. That way, they can't get mad because they had a warning like, ten minutes before it actually shut down. |

@Dyn, you're a fool. And guys, I'll explain how it works. You know those games on the front page, that have more then 50+ servers? It would take quite a while to check each one for certain reasons, as when to shut down.
You have two options: Nothing OR Shut them all down.
With this suggestion, you can set them to shut down at a certain time, allowing for an update to happen, or clear up old server, etc.
My suggestions were things like: After a certain time, or (Lua skills nessicary) a "Custom" option which would shut down the server after something happened.
Say, we have The Conquerors. It's a RTS game, and the rounds are 120 minutes. HatHelper, could script into his game, that when he click the "Custom" button, the server will shut down when "so and so" happens. In this case, it could be when a round ends.
This would go out to all servers when the button is clicked, so all the OLD servers are gone, but only new ones would come in. Come on guys, let's get more supports?
Also, Dyn why would you NOT support? Reasons?

More of a bump then anything.
@wow, that's not very effective.
@Dyn, I'm assuming you mean to go on each server and shut it down. HORRIBLY, HORRIBLY ineffective through time.
Bump.

@123 Don't call someone a fool just because he doesn't agree with you. You have your opinions and he has his. Yes I do agree he didn't explain he doesn't support, but I'm sure he has his reasons. In the future, not everyone will agree with you or support you, but you have to live with it. If you he did say why have a counter to it that is ok, but randomly calling someone a fool just because he doesn't agree with you is not necessary.
Anyways I think it will be very hard to script everything you said. I think a good way is to shutdown server if there is new update when the current round is done. It may be not as effective, but its pretty effective and definitely alot easier to script.
Anyways I like your idea. Support! |

@giga We have that. Having only "Shut down all" and "Do nothing" isn't very fun, and also shuts both new and old servers. As I have said, it's much more practical to have this. @Kill you're acting like I went full out flame-war loving, insult spewing, rampaging, rough housing, forumer. I called him a "fool". He didn't list his reasons, I have yet to find ANY cons for this, etc. etc.
Bump really.

This is scriptable. I have thought about doing auto shutdowns, to shut down a server that doesnt match an update.
