I just felt like mentioning real quick, as the forum is largely kids and teens, hence the future, that mental disorders arn't equal to insanity.
Retardation won't make you go durrrhurrr.
Bipolar doesn't make you dangerous or switch from crying to happy to angry at the tip of a hat.
Schizophrenia won't make you start killing people.
AIDS doesn't mean you like people of your own gender.
Etc.
Weve dealt with bias against race, religious belief or lack of, gender, etc, in the past. We even use to say that people who had cancer were disgusting, weak, and contagious. Now we all realize they have a simple, deadly, disease.
Alright, kiddies? |

I've yet to find any single mental disorder that fit it's stereotype. If anything, I've only had friends suicide in the past as their disorder became public, and they always had people harassing them about it. Things such as wrist-cutting are also stereotyped now that I think of it. They aren't emo, it simply relieves the physical and mental tension. Cutting actually works, which is why they find it addictive.
The majority of people cut even hide it, whether on the wrists, legs, arms, etc, or not. |

"im somewhat schizo, and bipolar."
judging from "somewhat" and other things, that sounds like self-diagnosis which you really shouldn't do |

@iimadpotato
self-diagnosis is almost always incorrect
scratch that, all of them are incorrect except if you're a doctor in that stuff |

| Like Mad said. If you ever plan to get any form of diagnosis, it's best to see a doctor. Especially for bipolar, due to the high suicide rate. He could prescribe lithium or something of the like for you. |

that's true,
but i don't think someone with schizophrenia would go on the computer considering all the 'schizophrenia' dangerous materials.
also, bi-polar takes a longer time to suddenly change, maybe a few more minutes than that.
retardation only makes the person seem stupid on the outside when the inside is genius.
add and adhd is an attention disorder, if i'm correct, and the symptoms can't really be debilitated considering that the symptoms are practically the same as the ones that mock them.
also,
the last one isn't a mental disorder lol what |

there's a stereotype that bipolar ii is just the less severe form of bipolar i the suicide rate is roughly the same in both conditions |

"but i don't think someone with schizophrenia would go on the computer considering all the 'schizophrenia' dangerous materials."
there are meds to control it
"also, bi-polar takes a longer time to suddenly change, maybe a few more minutes than that."
in most cases, months |

"there are meds to control it"
what if the person wasn't diagnosed and is clueless but still has it?
"in most cases, months"
a few more minutes than that would mean it's the shortest. the longest i've heard was a year or two. |

That last one was mostly for comparison, as we use to stereotype it far more than we do today. Hopefully it will be the same for mental disorders.
Anyways, schizophrenia you wouldn't need to fear too much if they keep their medication on check,
bipolar rarely switches like that in minutes. They also won't go frmo, say, sad to angry to happy. Theres mania, hypomania, stable, and depression. Most people stick to one of those four for a week for two before switching.
Retardation, I implied things like intellectually retarded. Intelligence is how quickly you learn. As such, someone with retardation simply needs to study more. |

| As for bipolar I vs II, bipolar II may actually have a higher suicide rate. Some surveys agreeed with that. It's because Bipolar II spends more time in depression than bipolar I. |

People seem to be focused a bit on bipolar so I'll be some more info. Thers 4 actual 'moods'.
Mania: Absurd energy. You're generally scared of yourself at this point. Spending sprees, no sleep as long as you're in mania, etc.
Hypomania: You're energetic, happy, getting a lot of work done, etc. This mood is why people with bipolar often say they wouldn't give it up. The creativity and happiness and so forth.
Stable: Meh. It's rare. As the name implies, they're stable.
Depression: It's depression. And no, thoguhts don't cause depression. You can't just 'get over it'.
Bipolar II's spend a lot of time in depression, and some time in stable or hypomania.
Bipolar I's spend some time in Mania now and again, along with a little depression, some stable, some hypomania.
Theres some other things like cyclothymia, but it gets complicated. |

Funny thing is that very few people with schizophrenia act like that, and that those with mental illness in general are jsut as likely to commit murder, theft, et cetera.
And bump. |
