@Color Flash is also, in some ways, the (unofficial, at least) web standard for many different things. But Flash will probably loosing that title as technology evolves, due to stuff like HTML5 and embedded Java applets. Standard isn't always good, and standards due grow out of date and get replaced. Not saying that Dart will do this, but JavaScript may not be the standard in the future.

"Flash is also, in some ways, the (unofficial, at least) web standard for many different things."
LOL.
YEAH, RIGHT.
BECAUSE FLASH IS _TOTALLY_ A STANDARD.
L O L.

"But Flash will probably loosing that title as technology evolves, due to stuff like HTML5 and embedded Java applets."
Flash never was a standard. Plugins can't be web standards.
All major browsers support JavaScript. Yet, only Chrome supports Flash by default and it didn't always support it.
"but JavaScript may not be the standard in the future"
And I hope it won't. I hope it will evolve.
But, right now, JavaScript _IS_ the standard and therefore wins against Dart. I hope this will not remain the case forever, but, right now, JavaScript _IS_ the standard. |

"(unofficial, at least)" Also, a standard, according to a web dictionary, is an "approved model". If Flash is generally used for, say, video playback on the web, is it not an "approved model" for doing so? "JavaScript _IS_ the standard and therefore wins against Dart." A new standard is chosen for many reasons, but if any language that isn't standard is neglected because of such, then how can it ever become standard, letting technology move forward?

Who gives a crap what the web standard is. That has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion, since Dart compiles to Javascript when the browser doesn't have the Dart VM.
If I were to make a website, I would probably use Dart. It's pretty awesome.
Coffeescript is also kinda nice. |

I think Myrkos said it better than me, and in a good deal less text.

@jode
Flash isn't an "approved model". It's just a plugin made by Adobe that many websites use.
"A new standard is chosen for many reasons, but if any language that isn't standard is neglected because of such, then how can it ever become standard, letting technology move forward?"
What I'm saying is that we shouldn't use Dart right now, not that we should neglect it.
I'm just saying that it isn't ready to be used. In fact, no browser supports it right now (by that, I mean no browser has the VM built-in right now, I know it can also just be translated to JavaScript).
Dart might or might not be a good idea and that needs to be explored. We shouldn't abandon it just because it isn't a standard, because it might become one, but we shouldn't consider it as a standard right now, and, therefore, we shouldn't use it for production stuff.
@myrkos
I care what the web standard is, because that's what most browsers respect, and I want my website to work correctly in the latest versions of browsers.
Yes, it can translate to JavaScript when the browser doesn't support it, but then, it will be slower.
Also, I don't think you should use Dart if you make a website yet. Just because it's awesome doesn't mean it's stable, nor that most browsers support it. |

Have you even looked at the site? It translates directly to standard-compliant Javascript with no speed penalty at all, since the languages aren't that different. In fact, it can do optimizations to make it even faster than average Javascript. The argument that it isn't "standardized" is crap because it works on all standard-compliant browsers just as well. |

I give up. You are about as solid in your opinions as a block of steel. Anyways, off the flame war, I might use Dart, simply because it has classes. Classes are awesome.

@myrkos
In that case, why even bother making a Dart VM? |

| So that it can take full advantage of its features and make it potentially faster and better than Javascript? |

Why does Dart need its own VM?
I'd think that sort of obvious. I mean really, who wouldn't want extra features and a language optimized VM? |
