...Money?

I'm not talking about paper money or change. I'm talking about the concept of currency as a whole.

Inflation is increasing all over the globe. What would happen when the currencies eventually become debased entirely? Would we get by in a golden era of peace and spirituality, or would it be anarchy in the worst sense of the word?

I'd like to hear your opinions. I have a feeling that a complete monetary collapse is closer than we think.

The world would be a socialist type government. No money - just trading of goods WITHOUT money.

Think back to the last time we had a barter economy.

There you go.

Do you suppose life was better or worse back then (with bartering)?

A barter economy is one where you exchange items for those of percieved equal value.

It generally creates economic stagnation and doesn't really increase agregate welfare.

Really simple, dude....

@X135: It's trading objects for other objects. Say if you needed a few baskets, you could trade something you made, say a bolt of fabric, for those baskets if both sides agreed.

Bartering is basically where we started out before currency.

Think of the ancient trade systems.

Typically used in cultures with a strong emphasis on tradition in order to maintain economic stability.

Ahh, I said that in my earlier post. You'd trade goods for other goods.

@Tax: Value is an illusion. Things only have value because we give them value.

Ehhhh...not quite, a moneyless society would still have value in use and value in exchange.

I think bartering societies are better when everyone manufacturing their own stuff. But today the people that manufacture their own stuff are company owners that are massivelly producing that stuff through workers and machines. If we would go on bartering the companies would collapse and everyone will be manufacturing their own stuff again, setting the community backwards.

Custom, societies in which everyone is self-sufficient are the epitome of inefficient.

But 1.) It is hard for everyone to manufacture their own stuff and 2.) this will return the world into feudal times, making today's infrastructure totally worthless.

"The world would be a socialist type government. No money - just trading of goods WITHOUT money."

Um no.

Bartering has nothing to do with Socialism. Bartering is arguably a primitive form of capitialism if anything. Socialism is when they government pretty controls the economy and all aspects of life and determines in their eyes what is fair, what is enough and what is right and what is wrong. They control property, companies all sorts.

Iqualit, socialism is best defined (there are a few exceptions) as when the workers own the four factors of production (alternatively, they gain control of the remaining three; entrepreneurship is generally already owned at least in part by the workers).

You've defined a command economy. The only way your scenario would be socialism is if the country was very, very democratic.

No. You have described communism or what dreamers hope communism will turn out to be once they decide to take it on but usually the human element prevents them.
