Well, here it is, the uber-controversial Before Watchmen's first title to be released. Obviously, all over the interwebs there's been an influx of outrage and people calling this out as a quick money-grab. Alan Moore himself condoned the project, even calling it an exploit or something. On the other hand, Dave Gibbons gave this project his blessing.
Now, onto the comic. It is written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke, with colors by Phil Noto. All the comic is is basically an explaining of who the original Minutemen, a look into each of the 8 heroes that it was made of. It starts off with the first Nite Owl writing the epilogue of his new novel and then it goes into this monologue of him telling us who the individual members of the Minutemen were. What I liked about it was that it kind of showed that each member had their own psychological problem. Hooded Justice was pretty adamant about justice, Silk Specre I was in it for the publicity and money, The Comedian was a psychopath and sadistic sociopath, Sillhouette was, y'know, "a-woman-who-likes-women", Mothman on drugs, and it seems like Nite Owl I is the only sane person and only one that wants to fight for true justice on the team, a Nick Carraway of sorts. But it ends with them going to talks about forming a team.
Now, the art matches the era absolutely. Most of the book takes place in 1939, when these "mystery men" are about. It has this sort of 'noir' look to it, and the coloring adds to that, even in light scenes, it makes it look like on of those 1930's/40's comics somewhat. The writing is great, it actually makes me consider reading Cooke's other works, such as that one Justice League book he did. New Frontier, next frontier, I can't remember.
Overall, it's a pretty great book. The Black Freighter back up was okay, albiet it was only two pages long.
It is one of those better comics, usually the comics I get per week are 'okay' or 'good'.
Now this, this is totally worth the 4 bucks.

I liked how we learned more about the Minutemen.
I don't think we ever learned much about the team's motives. |

Well, I guess issue two covers that. The flashback ends on when Captain Metropolis starts to call Sally Jupiter about starting a team.
But my favorite part was The Comedian's part. He was/is so messed up. |

I was referring to the motives of the members in the original comic., sorry. I should have worded it better.
I think my favorite was Sally Jupiter's part. It reminded me of Booster Gold, as well. |

Well, here, The Comedian is just wearing a simple mask and costume. And he beats people and the bartender up in the bar. And eats a rotten egg in front of the guy. And steals the money And most of the time he's laughing like a maniac. |
