Time is of the Essence Chapter-2
I sat on the dock as rescue crews gathered the soldiers who were still alive and took them to our HQ. I expected more, though only my squad and about a dozen others lived. Hundreds lost, nothing gained. As a large helicopter takes them away, I stare into the deep lake. The rain has slowed down by now, just drizzling. Cold, a member of my squad, comes over and sits next to me. “That wasn’t the most graceful battle…” he starts to say. “Nor the most successful.” “Yeah, but still, we did the best we could. There was nothing else we could have done” I look at my reflection in the water. I look worn out and tired, but of course I couldn’t sleep. Our commander was kidnapped by our enemy. This is probably why he chooses not to have any enemies (So stop asking for one) “No, we didn’t do the best we could” I argue, “We could’ve had more men protecting Cappy-” “-You know he wouldn’t allow that. He has too much pride than to be surrounded and protected” “Still. We could’ve done more. And now he’s gone, along with half of our entire army. There are so many, they probably won’t get a burial. This just sucks. We lost our commander, half our army, and the enemy. And Jay. He’s dead too, because I didn’t kill the hacker. If I had killed him right away, everyone would still be alive, we wouldn’t need to hunt down the hacker, and we probably wouldn’t need to go after Cappy.” “You know as well as I do that you couldn’t shoot the guy. We had to question him. He obviously has an army, small or large, doesn’t matter” replied Cold. “But-” “No. No buts. We did great out there and you know it. There was nothing more we could’ve done to prevent this. It was all planned out.” Cold said, “Now, let’s get back to our HQ and think over all of this” “You’re right Cold.” I turn to see one last helicopter, stocked with Keane, Mike, Caveman, and John. As Cold walks me to the helicopter, I notice a small leak in the gas pipe. I can even smell the gas, too. Wait…no! “Get out of the heli!” I yell. It was too late. Keane had already turned the key as only Caveman and John heard me. They made it halfway out of the helicopter before it completely exploded. I fall onto my knees as the smoke clears and Cold, who is now on the ground behind me, is getting up. “Mother-” Cold started. I stare at the burnt remains of the helicopter. As I look closer at it, I force myself to look away. I saw the few remains of a burnt corpse, along with a few limbs all over what was left of the helicopter. “They’re…dead” I mumble. “My squad…is dead. No; my friends are dead” I crawl towards the explosion sight, where a perfectly fine helicopter filled with my closest pals in the world sat moments ago. I look at the first corpse I see. Mike…I remember when I first met him. He was a power hungry maniac. My power hungry maniac… I push the corpse aside and walk away. I had to. I couldn’t stay there and locate the other dead bodies. “We need an extraction for two” I say into my walkie talkie, “Have any room to turn around and pick us up?” “I think so, we’ll be there soon” the respondent says. I sit down at the dock I was sitting at before the explosion. I didn’t dare look back at the burnt up helicopter. I couldn’t let myself. “They’re getting a burial” I say. “What?” Cold asks, standing behind me. “I’m making sure, each and every one of these soldiers gets an honorable burial” I say, without turning around to face Cold. He understood and stayed behind me, silently. We wait there, at the dock, until a helicopter lands to pick us up. We climb inside with the other survivors, but I didn’t sit in the back area. I sat in the copilot seat next in the front. As we fly away, I wasn’t able to even force myself to look back. I stare out the window and hold back a tear as we leave the battle site. But we’d be back. I promised myself we’d go back. For my squad, for my friends. For NEA. |
