| They say they don't go with the rest of its cities architecturally, and the Koran does not mention them, so they are unneeded. Discuss. |

Hmm, this structure doesn't look nice with all of the others.
Let's get rid of it.

| Switzerland doesn't really do that either. There is a law that most buildings need to be around the same size. Love minarets, but they don't go well in a western European city. |

| I love how when a Muslim country bans an article of clothing everyone goes psychotic but when a non-muslim country bans religious architecture no one makes a fuss. |

57% of Swiss voters back a referendum proposal to ban the building of minarets, official results show. This was in 2009, OP.
Behind this was loads of fearmongering and stuff. Look at this ad of the main nationalist party which drove this law:

or this

or

Also, I believe it's everyone's freedom to build anything he wants in his own property. You really believe that Switzerland is alps and cute wooden houses and churches, don't you?
What if I told you, Switzerland is a major European country with very urban areas, and in most parts of Zurich or any other big cities, you wouldn't know if you're in Switzerland or Canada, except by the language?
Now you wonder how did the minaret that launched this controversy looked like? http://upload.wikimediaDOTorg/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/95/Moschee_Wangen_bei_Olten.jpg/800px-Moschee_Wangen_bei_Olten.jpg
Minarets in European countries never recite the athan or anything, they are used as marks for muslims to show where the mosques are. They're always muted.
So stop going with this "swiss architecture" stuff. No one is going to build you london islamic centres in gruyères or national parks.
Here's sweden's opinion on the ban
Sweden condemned the ban, and foreign minister Carl Bildt stated that "It's an expression of quite a bit of prejudice and maybe even fear, but it is clear that it is a negative signal in every way, there's no doubt about it".
He also stated that "Normally Sweden and other countries have city planners that decide this kind of issue. To decide this kind of issue in a referendum seems very strange to me". |

Minarets are important and can be used to call the Athan.
If Saudi banned Church Bells there would be mass protests. |

Minarets are important and can be used to call the Athan. __ In europe theyre not even used to call the athan. Theyre just marks for muslims that "hey, here is a mosque, welcome!" |

| The Swiss like silly rules; how do you define a Minaret as not matching local architecture when it could (technically) have any design style applied to it? |

| They should respect atheists the same way we respect religious people and pray at their homes and stop hitting the bells at the morning because people want to rest at the weekend. |
