It was a time of despair. The dark lord had taken over all of the kingdoms in Avalon. He grew more and more powerful as the days went by. Things were very different in the kingdom. No children playing on the streets, no wives gossiping as they did the laundry in the river. No husbands walking along the dusty roads discussing one thing or another. The four royal siblings, Keera, Amber, John, and Xavier no longer preformed their songs on the streets. The elves remained in their huts high above the trees and the dwarves sealed their caves so that none could get in. The Dragons fled the land and those that remained were hunted down and slaughtered, as was the same with Unicorns, and Pegasus. The mermaids swam deep under the ocean and never came up. The king and queen never came out of the castle. It was a time of Evil.
Until, that is the king of elves and an apprentice wizard of air defeated the dark lord, but not once and for all.
After that, the land flourished. There was music and laughter in the streets once more. The brothers and sisters danced and sang to the village and the Dragons and Mermaids and Unicorns and Pegasus returned.
That is, until the dark lord comes back…

ch.1

~
I hopped the long distance from the trees to the ground. Thinking that this was to be a normal day, I walked amongst my people, the elves. Shouting hellos, they danced around me, children tossing crowns and flowers to put upon my head alongside my crown woven from leaves, enchanted into gold. I waved to the crowd, catching a blue wild flower in my hand, smelling its sweet aroma. I held it up to the crowd and walked out into the human village. I walked past the church and the villager’s homes, waving to them as well. My pale green dress swirled around my knees as I walked along the dusty path toward the castle. “It is I, Queen Sarahfeena, Queen of the Elves and master of all Earthen Magic,” I told the guard. The slightly rusted gate opened to reveal a stunning interior, with sparkling walls, polished wood, and diamonds at every corner. The only part of the castle that was not decorative was the jail, where there were rotting bodies of previous jailed persons. There was only one cell with a living criminal in it. I entered the door to the right from the well. It creaked open. I turned on my heel and inclined my head slightly. “Queen Sarahfeena,” the king acknowledged me, also inclining his head, a bit deeper than I had. I smiled. “And what was it you wanted to talk about?” I asked, still smiling. “Well, about that… Why don’t we take a walk?” “Oh, yes, that’d be lovely,” I said, knowing he wanted to talk privately. We walked quickly out of the stone castle until we were past the graveyard and near the mountainous range. “What is wrong?” I asked, sensing his aurora of black. “How did you know?” he teased. “You know,” I told him. “Well, we’ve had reports that the dark lord has come back,” he told me seriously. I laughed. “You’re joking,” I said. “No, I’m not. Why would I joke about something this serious?” He asked me. I furrowed my brow. “I… but, it couldn’t be, that would mean that…” I trailed off. “Yes. Now, think this over. We’re going to have to figure out how to stop him.”

We walked back to the castle in silence, both of us thinking over what to do. I bade them farewell and traveled back to my little kingdom. Still deep in thought, I went to the pen where I kept my Dragons, the elemental type, of course, earth. I walked over to them and let them loose. I had no doubt in them, they knew not to eat any elves or humans and they knew their way back. The two adults, Mellissa and Jeffery, walked off with their child, Felicity. I looked inside of the pen for Lestia. She wasn’t there. I flew through the forest looking for her. She wasn’t anywhere that I could see. Finally I spotted green scales through the branches of the trees. She was stumbling about. Her eyes were obviously not working. I crashed through the branches, heading for the dark spot of green I had seen. “Lestia!” I cried out, in dragon-tongue. She looked up at her name. “I’m blinded,” She told me. I carried her back to the pen where I began weaving a complex spell to restore her vision. As soon as I had cast it, I heard a rustling in the bushes. I looked up from the dragon and saw a young man dressed in the green robes of an apprentice Earth elemental wizard. “These dragons must leave,” he cried. “They are trampling the trees, the fences, everything!” He told me. “Well I can assure you that the fences are fine, they regrow instantly. I charmed them myself. As for the trees, they are magical, they can never die,” I told him. That was when I saw the bloody knife in his hand. He was the man who had blinded my dragon. As he noticed me looking at the hand he realized why. He sprinted across the forest. I ran after him. My long legs carried me fast across the forest floor, not tripping over knots in the roots or fallen leaves. As soon as he entered the town, I cast a spell that shot down vines from the surrounding trees and weaved them into a net that enclosed him. I ran up to him as guards and others approached. “He blinded my dragon,” I explained. “Kill him!” I heard many people say. “No!” I said, as the guard closest to us began to draw his sword. “Let me see something first.” He fought against the vines, trying to free himself but to no avail. He’d dropped his knife on the forest ground. “Who are you?” I snarled, pressing my face against the vines. “I’m Farnay Isulm, apprentice wizard of the Earth,” he told me. Then I noticed the dark cloud hovering above him. “You were possessed, weren’t you?” I asked him. “I suppose so, last thing I remember I was coming from the hotel…” he trailed off. I knew what hotel he was talking about. It was the wizard hotel in the outskirts of the village, the nearest building from where we were. “Now, would you please untie me?” he asked. I let the vines drop to the ground. “Thank you,” he said, getting up. I saw a white figure coming towards me. Looking up, I saw that the dark cloud now hovered over me.

The elven queen let the vines drop to the ground. “Thank you,” I said curtly. She looked up. Now I saw the cloud hovering above her. Even I knew the basic laws of possession, and all elven royalty and lords and ladies knew how to defend their minds, though I didn’t. She dropped to the ground, twitching as she did so. I could tell she was fighting. A paladin ran towards us. “He... I shall fight…. The dark lord…” she cried. What the possessor was saying was that the dark lord would fight his first -and hopefully last- fight tonight. Then a thought hit me. What if the possessor was the dark lord? For some reason, I couldn’t stand the thought. The paladin came. “Go to the top room of the hotel and find a light blue potion labeled ‘Will of Unpossessiment’,” he instructed me. I ran up the seven flights of stairs till I got to his room. Grabbing the potion, I ran down the stairs and flew out the door. Handing the potion to the Queen, I realized what it was. It would get rid of the possessor. The paladin uncorked it and handed it to her. She gulped it down and then went limp. “Carry her into my bed,” the paladin told me. I picked her up and, going slower, walked towards the hotel. I climbed the flights of stairs less forcefully and when I got to the room, lay her down upon the mattress and covered her with the silken blankets. I sat down at the deckchair by the parchment-covered table and thought. What had happened?
~
I walked around the scene of my attack thinking of my secret. I smiled. Nobody suspected. It was perfect.

I slowly opened my eyes, feeling weary. Sitting up, I saw that I was lying in a bed in the wizard hotel. I looked at the desk. The Apprentice Wizard was sitting in it, deep in thought. He had dark hair, brown eyes, and was of medium height and build. Looking up, he saw that I was awake and gave me a smile. “I think you’ll be alright,” he told me. The paladin came out of the connecting kitchen carrying a bowl of fruit. “Here, eat,” he told me. “Alright,” I agreed in a whisper. “She can barely speak, Golu,” the apprentice wizard, Farnay, said. “I’m still here,” I told them, coughing. A witch came into the view of the bed. “Go, you are not welcome here!” shouted Farnay. “Wait,” I said, coughing. Only the witch noticed me. The face looked faintly familiar… “Bonnie? Is that you? ” I asked the witch. Or rather, the pretend witch. “Go!” Farnay continued to shout. “No,” I said, speaking as loud as I could. “Bonnie, why are you here?” I asked. She glanced around nervously, closing the door and locking it. Shaking her hair, she pulled off her witch hat. As her short, black hair swept around her face, it slowly turned auburn and grew longer. When it was at her elbows it stopped growing. Farnay was gawking at her, jaw open and eyes as big as dinner plates. “You’re a shape-shifter?” he asked, jaw still hanging. “What’d you think, I was a real witch?” she asked, her eyes quizzical. Her eyes had turned from black to bluish-green, and she had grown about four or five inches. Bonnie was sixteen or seventeen now, about three or four years younger than I. “Everyone knows that witches are not welcome in this kingdom. I had to travel in disguise, of course, though,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Bonnie is my cousin,” I told them in a raspy voice. “She’s an elf, but she’s also a shape-shifter.” “Oh,” Farnay said faintly. His jaw was now closed and his eyes were no longer huge. “Why did you think that I was a real witch anyway?” she asked. “I… just, well… I didn’t want anyone to be hurt, I guess,” he said sheepishly. Bonnie smiled a knowing smile and tossed her hair. “Well eat up,” she told me, tossing me another apple and a loaf of bread. I was vegan, as all elves are. I was also trained in earth elemental magics, but I won’t get into that. Scarfing down the food, I asked if there was anything else. “Ah,” said the paladin, Golu. “I have something that should help.” I realized vaguely that this was the first time I had heard him speak. He rummaged around in a cupboard for a moment, and then pulled out a small goblet. “Drink this,” he instructed me. “What is it?” I asked, confused. “It’ll cure your hunger,” he said, smiling kindly at me. After you are possessed, most of your energy is gone, so you need a potion, or much food and sleep. “Oh,” I said, raising the goblet to my lips. It was filled with a clear liquid, and I instantly felt replenished after drinking it. “Well, get out of bed, we’ve got to go Dark-lord-hunting, don’t we?” she asked, eyes shining with anticipation. “I don’t know,” Farnay said anxiously. “I mean, erm, she-” “Sarahfeena,” I informed him. “Yes, Sarahfeena was just possessed…” he trailed off, unsure. “I mean we shouldn’t just go and well, hunt the dark lord, after that, should we?” he finished. “Yes, then Golu and I will leave you two lovebirds alone,” she teased. Farnay turned pink and I could feel my own blood rising to my face. “We hardly even know each other- we just met!” he spluttered. “I kidding, kidding, we’ll just go, then, you can just stay here and make sure she doesn’t jump off the roof…” Farnay sat down again, very disgruntled. Bonnie and Golu opened the door, and, talking in low voices, walked down the stairs. Bonnie seemed as though she knew something…

“I’m sorry about hurting your dragon, I… I guess I was possessed,” I said after the long silence after Bonnie’s comment. “It’s alright, you were possessed, it was your possessor that actually did it,” she responded. “It’s pretty obvious that we were both possessed. She slipped out of the silken covers and slid on the light satin shoes that had moved so swiftly through the branches of the forest, chasing me down. I finally had a chance to look at her in full. She had waist-length white hair that had a tint of green, though it obviously wasn’t dyed. It had many flowers weaved and intertwined into it. I could smell the sweet aroma from here. Her eyes were a pale blue-green that would sweep you away in an instant if she laughed, or even just smiled. “But who did it?” she asked. I couldn’t tell if she was asking me or herself. “Well,” I spoke up, “I guessed for a minute that it might be the dark lord… but that’s crazy… He couldn’t come back, could he? I mean, the air wizard and elven king-” “Mirrisa and Warlik,” she quickly informed me. “Yes, them, they banished him, didn’t they? He can’t come back...” “…Or can he?” she finished. “Can I trust you with something?” she asked, leaning forward. “I just saved your life, you can obviously trust me,” I said. She got up to check if there was anyone behind the door and, seeing that there wasn’t, closed it again and locked it. “Before any of this happened, I was at a meeting with the king. He told me that there was evidence in this very kingdom that he has indeed returned.”
~
“You’re kidding,” he said, much like I had. “No. I’m not,” I responded seriously. The dwarves have reported strange mists coming in at night and taking their children. My people, the elves, have indeed seen shadows and such in the pale moonlight seeping through the trees limbs. The dwarves may soon seal their mountains in fright as they did years ago. The elves may barricade the doors of their huts high above the trees. The king and queen may shut the drawbridge and never open it again for friend or foe. All of this is because of him,” I tell him. “When Golu returns, we must tell him, he said. “Who is Golu, anyway?” I asked. “He’s a paladin, descended from heaven. And, well, he’s very secretive. He had the potion that saved your life,” he responded. “Alright. I suppose they should be back in about an hour,” I said. We sat in silence for a while before Farnay asked me a question.
~
I puzzled over what Golu had said. “But aren’t you their…” I trailed off as we walked back up the stairs to the hotel.

She hurriedly unlocked the door as she heard voices and footsteps coming up the stairs and sat down, her dress swirling like waves around her slightly tanned knees… I glanced at the door and saw Bonnie talking to Golu as they whisked inside the room. “Hello,” said Bonnie. Golu raised a hand in greeting. “Come,” he said to Farnay. “Why?” he asked, half-glancing at me. “Training in the art of Life Magic,” he responded. He glanced at me again. “What about Sarahfeena?” he asked. “That is her business,” he said, hurriedly shooing him out the door. He locked it. “Why aren’t you teaching me life magic? I asked. He said, “You are a master of Earthen Magic. Earth is life. You know how to care for life, nurture it, you have the will, the strength, and the power in you, but it must be unlocked at the right time. That time is approaching rapidly, and if you two fail, there is no way that this kingdom will live. You and Farnay are our last hope.”
~
I waited at the door, impatient as always. He was telling her something about life magic, no doubt. I resisted the urge to put my ear against the door. After about a minute, Golu came out. “Hullo,” I said dully. “I suppose you can’t tell me a detail of what you just said to her,” “Actually I can tell you one. You and Sarahfeena are our last hope,”
~
“Come on outside,” Bonnie said. “Ok,” the elf queen responded. I could hear them through the wall. I smiled a small half-smile; as much as I could manage under this cloak of darkness… my soul was here… my body elsewhere. The perfect time for another attack.
~
They walked out, Sarah still a bit shaky from her experience with the possessor. Him. Ah, I won’t think ‘bout it. Gives me a bit o’ chills, him being the… ah, forgitin’ again…
~
I waved at the Xavier, passing by me to go to the graveyard. He goes there every day; he’s like a miniature king already, paying his respects to them every day. So easy for him… All of a sudden he collapsed. We rushed over. There was no doubt about it. He was dead. The official report was that he’d died as a cause of fever, but I remember him a day ago, perfect prince, black-haired, big, brown eyes, skin a rich, dark chocolate… he’d always been so nice to me and all of my people… I let a teardrop slowly etch a path through the dirt on my face from when the dark lord possessed me before I wiped it away. I was never in love with him, no, but he’d been an amazing friend, always there when I skinned my knee as a child, playing in the field, when my parents died and I had to take the throne, when I realized that I wouldn’t be able to pick my own husband… I knew that he had the courage; he always loved this world… I could tell that it was magic that killed him. If a mortal was killed by magic… “Wait…” said Bonnie, realizing what I was thinking. “…Then he or she has the option to come back into this world as the same person...” we said together. We saw the body suddenly stir…

“Xavier!” I screamed, launching myself onto him.
~
He had hardly stood up and almost fell to the floor. “It’s alright, ‘m here,” he said. His voice was muffled, due to Sarah’s hair. “I thought you were dead,” she said. She sounded like she was sobbing, but not with sadness. With relief. She finally pulled herself away from him and her eyes were surprisingly dry, and still their normal color of pale bluish-greenish. Well, she’d been royalty her entire life, she probably had to stop after she was four or five… I could tell, though, that she loved him in a brotherly way, in fact, they looked as though they could be brother and sister, how they acted around each other…
~
I followed Golu. He was surprisingly quick on his legs, almost as fast as an elf. I tried to keep up. After hours of walking, he finally stopped. I was panting from the journey. We were beyond the mountain range, going through a gap that you could only see form here, not the inside of all of the kingdoms. “We will now start your training,” Golu told me louder than usual. His voice made me jump. “Yes, alright.” I said.
~
We left Xavier at the castle, his parents believed him dead, as well. I walked with more of a spring in my step; it looked almost as though I was skipping. We quickly made our way to the elven village, walking along the path worn by so many travelers, through the bustling village, towards the path lees worn, where it stops, slipping into the jungle of tree roots under my foot and leaves, vines, and branches overhead. I ventured into the actual village, climbing the ladder woven of twigs, leaves, vines, and even some parts of the largest tree in the center of the elven kingdom. The tree was hollowed out and all you had to do was walk straight into it and climb up. I was greeted with flowers and cheers again. I was weary, yes, but I was royalty, I had to look like I was fit for the job, no matter what. So I smiled and caught another flower daintily, a red rose this time. A sign of love. Psht, what do flowers know?

ik it's short but this is knda like an intro 2 wat happens next, so it kinda had to be by itself. i like the ending. =P *Hint Hint*
