STARFLEET CORPS OF ENGINEERS - Starship Building Guide/Recommendations

This is the guide and recommendations for all Starships designed and/or constructed after May 30th, 2012. Anything created/designed before then is exempt from this, but should be refitted to fit the specifications. NOTHING HERE is classified, don't bother reading it if your not in SC.

In accordance to Starfleet Corps of Engineers primary rules/regulations, you must be able to prove this by the rank stated (as far as I know, things change.):

• Ensign – Fleet Captain = Must be able to build 8 deck ships, and include Moderate Detail, by Fleet Captain. Must also be able to build using CFrame.

• Rear Admiral – Vice Admiral = Should be able to do the same as a Fleet Captain, but instead of 8 decks it need to be 10, with High Detail, and be able to manipulate Meshes and use CFrame.

• Admiral – Fleet Admiral = Should be able to build 10+ deck ships, using CFrame and/or Meshes. Mesh Manipulation detail must be high, CFrame detail must be high. Must be able to use CFrame. Must be able to mesh.

REMINDER – Only members wearing the Gold uniform (you have to wear ONLY the Gold, you can’t switch between two or all three) can be promoted for building ships. Blue shirts, go script. Red shirts… you know what to do. :P

Your ship MUST BE 4 decks or higher to qualify for any grading, no ship in Starfleet is smaller than 5 decks (Defiant), but we’ll give you a little leeway and allow 4. Anything over 10 decks, depending on detail, can get laggy. Roblox most likely won’t support anything over 20 w/o help. Summarized:

• Deck requirement: 4 – 20; can be higher than 20 if you can find a way to minimize lag and/or Roblox crashes.

ALL ships NEED to have these rooms:

• Bridge
• Engineering
• Medical Bay/Sickbay
• Quarters (CO, XO, Department Heads, and basic Crew Quarters)
• Brig
• Transporter Room

Larger ships should also have these rooms (7+ decks):

• Shuttlebay
• Junior Officer Quarters
• Airlock
• Cargo bay(s)

Corridors must be wide enough for people to pass by each other with little collision, but not insanely wide. They must also be tall enough for head-room camera movement, but not insanely high. It needs to be proportionated (means ‘sized with respect to each of its respective sides.’ for those people w/ little vocabulary) like you would see on the show/movies, about 2 - 3 feet of head room, and enough room for 2 – 3 abreast, depending on what kind of ship it is, be it militaristic, scientific or whatever you want.

Therefore:

• Minimum size: 8 x 8 ([W x H], this is taken directly from my style, as I build as small as possible to conserve space, and it seems to work.)
• Maximum size: 10 x 10 (Robloxian height is 6 w/ hats, and 4 wide.

Door size needs to be 7 - 8 tall, any taller is bad, any shorter won’t let people through. It needs to be at 6 - 8 wide for normal doors, and 8 – 10 for larger doors (ones you see on the door to the holodeck, shuttlebay or cargo bays).

ALL ships must have reasonable detail, including, but NOT limited to:
• CFrame
• Meshes (block, wedge, corner wedge, cylinder)
• Decals
• A good color scheme

A good color scheme, you say? Well… anyone who has been to my previous ships (the Saratoga especially, BAD color scheme.), you’ll see what I mean. The walls should be a lighter grey color, and the floor can be certain shades of brown, light red, bright blue and dark blue. Trust me, you need good color scheme. When you floors and walls are the same color, the corners can blend can blend, and you won’t be able to see them. Plus, it looks tacky. Now, on to the others. I’m most likely going to get quite a few pointed tells about the whole CFrame thing from some people. Well… it’s not that hard to learn, and there are options out there to help you do it without having to user the Command bar. I use Command Utility, which is made by Anaminus, and it’s not that hard to learn. It’s user friendly, if you can figure it out. Took me a week to learn CFrame once I decided to learn it… and I’m busier with RL things than most. My building skills improved… ten-fold. So GO LEARN IT! There is the Mesh alternative for the lower ranks, but those looking to get higher then Captain NEED to learn it, as stated in the SCoE rules and regulations, “Must also be able to build using CFrame.” So, I’ll say it again. Learn. It. The meshes are good for consoles, particularly the screens/input screens. Combined with CFrame, it makes very nice detail for any ship. A great use for meshing/CFraming is to make wall panels in the corridors, that’s what I do. Use wedges on the bottom of the floor to designate where the floor meets the wall. And for those inside corners… that’s where CFrame comes in handy. Decals are the odd one out here. Not many people can make good decals, and the ones who do don’t usually give them out. I can’t make Decals, at all. So I don’t use them, usually. I’m good at making name plates for ship doors and such, but that’s the limit to my skill. All of this is up to you… but, remember, good detail and the use of meshes and CFrame are required to get very high in the group. Basic rundown of uses:

• CFrame/Meshes – Gives great detail to any ship; can be used to make consoles, seamless transitions between things (walls, ceiling, and floor), angled corners, etc.
• Decals – Making nameplates, signifying things, give consoles/terminals greater detail, etc.
• Color Scheme – Makes your ships look better, less tacky. Gives greater definition to corridors and rooms.

Now, for all of the rooms stated earlier that you need, you need some basic things in them. For the Bridge, you need these things:

• Captain’s Chair (can have a console built into it, if you want)
• Helm/Navigation(Navigation can be integrated, or be a separate console)
• Tactical (Security can be built in)
• Engineering (can be automated, but it has to be there)
• Science (at LEAST Science I, can also include Science II)

For Engineering, you need:

• A kind of drive core, most likely a warp core. Any other drive core needs to be approved. Details will be presented later.
• The MSD table in the center of Engineering (‘pool table’ to some)
• Numerous consoles lining the walls.

All standard Federation drive cores are a Matter/Antimatter Reaction Assembly system, or the M/ARA. They are driven by the controlled reaction of deuterium and anti-deuterium collisions in a dilithium crystal matrix. If you have another drive core, which requires an unknown fuel (using Mass Effect as an example, the Tantalus drive core on the Normandy ran off of Eezo [element zero]), you need to talk to someone about the veracity of acquiring the fuel in the Star Trek universe. If you can’t get it legitimately in the ST universe, it’s out. No exceptions, we try to be close as possible. If it is possible, you need to make a forum post about it, so other people can use it for ideas. Other than that, use a standard warp core. Make them look realistic as possible. This is where CFrame and meshes come in handy.

Crewman quarters on smaller vessels need to hold 4 people. On larger ships, you can add more crewman quarters, and shrink the number in each room to 2. Crewman quarters have 2 sonic showers, and 1 sink. Junior officers live with enlisted crewman on smaller ships, but can get their own quarters on larger ships, depending on room. Junior quarters have a sonic shower, a sink, and a small console to use. Department heads, the XO, and the CO get their own quarters. They get either a water-fed shower, or a sonic one. They also get a sink and an office with full LCARS access. The transporter needs a beaming console, and at least a transporter pad that can beam 2 people. Most possible at one time is 6, unless you have higher technology. The medical bay needs to house at least 5 people, more on larger ships. Larger ships also need to have one isolated bio-bed you can field off for quarantine protocols. The brig needs to house at least 2 people on smaller ships, and 4 - 8 people on larger ships. Larger ships should have group confinement cells, holding up to 4 people, and solitary confinement cells.

In terms of grading… well, Star removed the point system in favor of a classroom-system. Only problem being, it requires the new Academy to be finished, and it’s not. Until then, most promotions are put onto hold, except from Cadet to Ensign, if you pass Basic Training. For basic grading rules, it’ll be based off of neatness, lag, functionality, and detail. Also, the ship must have less than 5% free models to get full consideration. Anything over 10% will NOT be graded. Scripting and decals does NOT count towards this; you’re engineers, not a science team or decal designers. Taking others ideas also counts against you. If it’s something like how a door looks, it can be looked over. As far as I know, Admirals can grade, but only Fleet Admirals can promote.

If you have any other questions, or suggestions to add to this, PM me, Rickey684, and I will ask my superiors (particularly Star) about it.

Last time I checked, it was 20% Free Models, and it was out. All in all, it's good. A bit more of a Sectioned Layout would be good, it got a bit confusing at times during the larger sections. Mainly because Roblox Font is a lot smaller than a standard font you would see on IE or GC.

Oh, and the Deck Limit only counts for the SCoE? I have 2, 3 Deck Ships being built. Also, the Defiant was only 4 Decks. And had no Brig.

@chak, Well, technically, only people wearing Gold uniforms can be promoted towards ship building. Anyone can build ships, but only Golds get promo'ed. The deck requirement is just a guide, it's harder to fit all of what you need in anything under 4 decks, unless you have pro skills, and even then, you'd be building bigger and better ships. We also need to cut down on the percentage of free models, I've been seeing a lot of people who's whole ship, or more then half at least, are free models. Some of this info was taken off of Shippo's requirements from his September guide., and a brig seems prudent on any ship, hence why I added it. It was more sectioned out, but Roblox forum posts are a pain like that. :P
