| I would go for it. If you want to get down to business, instead of sh!#ng around, then Linux is the way to go. |

I use Windows because ROBLOX uses windows. But being as I hardly play ROBLOX anymore, I think I need to switch to Linux now. :/ |

I switched to Linux a long time ago. I got tired of dual booting JUST for ROBLOX- Now I just forum and script/help with scripts.

What can't Windows do? Ignore the stupid rebellious kids saying that Linux is so awesome with no convincing reason to back it up. |

@Emess
1. Easier to use 2. Faster 3. More room for customization (you can compile your own version of the kernel) 4. APT/RPM/package system 5. Epic command line 6. FREENESS (sure, Windows can be free, but not legally...c:) 7. Truly secure without invasive UAC prompts *cough* 8. Modularity (kind of goes with package manager)
Emess, I'm sorry if I convinced you that Windows was a good operating system. It was just a stage; I now see the many critical flaws that plague that overgrown dump of a system. I hope you reconsider. |

@LocalChum
1. In what way? In every linux installation I've used, everything (from multi-tasking to internet browsing) was much harder. 2. Maybe for servers, but as far as Desktops go, the speed gain is trivial. 3. Sure, but how many people really need/want to do that? 4. i can google stuff and download it :D 5. cmd 6. alright, this is a good reason. but most people here already have windows, so it doesn't really apply for your specific case 7. Windows is pretty secure unless you do something stupid. It's a tradeoff between easy of use and security. 8. ...wat.
LocalChum, I'm sorry that you believe that Linux is superior to windows. It never was, and honestly probably never will be. |

"1. Easier to use" That's arguable.
"2. Faster" True.
"3. More room for customization (you can compile your own version of the kernel)" What's the point?
"4. APT/RPM/package system" No point.
"5. Epic command line" I agree.
"6. FREENESS (sure, Windows can be free, but not legally...c:)" I can get free copies of Windows from my uncle (employee discounts). Plus, Windows is a good operating system and it's worth the money.
"7. Truly secure without invasive UAC prompts *cough*" Unlike Vista, Windows 7 requires administrator access whenever it wants to change the computer settings and such. Since Vista I have encountered no problems with it.
"8. Modularity (kind of goes with package manager)" Opinion.
And what does Windows have that Linux doesn't have? A bunch of programs use it. Simplicity. Frequent security updates. |

| I use Linux for the single reason of it having an awesome command line and the latest versions of GCC and other open source stuff. The package manager is nice but I can live without it, as goes with the awesome desktop environment. I just discovered that Macs have an awesome command line as well and support the latest versions of open source stuff just as easily as Linux (actually not quite as easily, but almost), and since I happen to have one and it can also play games like TF2 I've been using a Mac more than my other computers. |

"besides i thought you already had linux. i mean, most hackers do."
> Stereotyping.
Bu, yeah, many hackers have Linux. Perhaps because you need to know stuff about technology to be a hacker, and, if you know stuff about technology and you're smart, you'll instantly realize that Linux is way better than Windows.
"I use Windows because ROBLOX uses windows. But being as I hardly play ROBLOX anymore, I think I need to switch to Linux now. :/"
As soon as Studio 2 comes out, I'm removing Windows from my computer forever.
I just don't need it. The only thing I need Windows for is ROBLOX.
Gaming? I'm not one of those morons who think only Windows has good games...
I mean, yeah, Windows _does_ have more good games. AND? You don't need 10 million games anyway. Linux by itself has so many games that you'll never get to play them all, so it doesn't even matter if Windows has more games. YOU'LL NEVER GET TO PLAY THEM ALL ANYWAY.
Programming? I'm not one of those people who use Visual Studio. I use Eclipse because I like its features.
Programs? Yeah, Windows has more programs than Linux. But the same applies to this than to games. You don't need 10 million programs and Linux has programs for whatever you'd ever need.
Community? Hah! As if Linux didn't have enough users... Yeah, Windows has more users. And? Linux has so much users anyway that it's not a problem. If you need help, there are 1000 forums out there that can help you.
"What can't Windows do?"
What can't Linux do?
They both can do _ANYTHING_. There isn't anything that any of them can do and that the other can't do.
However, there are things that some do better than others.
And Linux does lots of things better than Windows.
- Interface. Linux is way more advanced than Windows on the interface side. You can't even deny it.
Not only Windows has kept the exact same interface since Windows 95 (all they've done is adding more blue and more transparency.. >_>), but they actually don't give you must options to customize the interface. Yeah, they let you change the color of windows and other basic stuff.
With Linux, you have the choice between many interfaces. And, within these interfaces, you have the choice between many settings.
- Security. You just can't deny this. Most Linux distributions, especially the popular ones, have a waaay better security than Windows.
You don't even need an antivirus on most Linux distributions. Yes, Linux _does_ have viruses. However, to get one of those viruses, you really have to WANT to get a virus. I mean, it's already hard to get a virus on Linux even if you want to get one, so imagine if you don't want to get one...
Unless you're a complete idiot, you can't get a virus on Linux. You just can't.
- File system. Most Linux distributions use ext4, which is by far better than NTFS. Won't even bother explaining why. One of the main advantages is the lack of fragmentation.
- Cost. Most Linux distributions are free (though some rare ones aren't free). You can't deny that it's always nice to have stuff for free. It allows you to have access to your favorite system everywhere without buying anything. It allows you to update to the latest version of the OS without having to pay. It allows you to use it on your computer without buying anything.
- Open source. The fact that Linux is open source allows advanced programmers to customize Linux even further if you need to for some reason, it allows you to create your own Linux distribution, it allows security flaws to be found much more quickly, it assures you that the OS doesn't do anything you don't want it to do without it knowing and it allows bugs to be found quickly as there are lots of people who can report them and look at the code to find a solution.
I could name many more, but I don't feel like writing any more stuff here. Just look it up on Google.
" 1. In what way? In every linux installation I've used, everything (from multi-tasking to internet browsing) was much harder."
That's because you're used to Windows.
If you presented both Windows and Linux to a person that has never used a computer before, he'd say that Linux is easier to use.
" 4. i can google stuff and download it :D"
Packages are better than downloading random exe installers from the web.
I won't even bother explaining this.
" 5. cmd"
Windows's command line can't even be compared to Linux's terminals. Seriously, Windows's command line still doesn't even have text coloring... Linux's command line is just better than Windows's command line and you just can't argue against that because it's a well known fact.
" 7. Windows is pretty secure unless you do something stupid. It's a tradeoff between easy of use and security."
Yeah, it's so secure that you still need to be careful even when you have an antivirus, a firewall, real-time protection and security built in the browser. Not even mentionning how they publish 50 security updates everyday to fix all the stupid flaws they've left in their system.
"And what does Windows have that Linux doesn't have? A bunch of programs use it. Simplicity. Frequent security updates."
You don't need that "bunch of programs". Linux already has so much software that you'll never get to know even 1% of all of it.
Linux has by far everything you'd ever need. Yes, Windows has more programs. But you DON'T need these programs, you already have everything you need.
Simplicity? What, because Linux isn't simple? Yes, some Linux distributions aren't simple. But many are extremly simple, even more than Windows. Nobody's forcing you to use the command line for everything, you know...
Frequent security updates? Yeah, well, Linux distributions have lots of updates too. I guess they have less security updates because they don't need as much security updates because flaws were already discovered before the OS even got to the stable version. |
