"He fell in October 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front, He had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping. Turning him over saw that he could not have suffered long; his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come." (296) All quiet on the Western Front. |

| Hacking away at an icy corpse. The man froze to death, but our commander insisted we take his clothing. I took his clothing, After bashing and chipping away the frozen fingers that grasped his rifle. Suddenly, I recognized the face. It was my cousin, And in my hand, I held his broken, almost ceramic forearm. |

@Brickster,
Oh my god, I love that book. It is so sad, though.

My favorite character was Katchinsky, or however you spell his name. The part about Leer; was ironically funny, though.

Kat was boss.
I liked the part when they were hiding in the house while being artillery bombarded, and trying to fry pancakes. |

The book is quite interesting; I believe. Whenever you say that you have a book written by a German perspective, people say, "omg naz1111!" However, the book was banned by the Naz1 party when they were coming to power; and was one of the main books burned by them, for its anti-war sentiment.
Anyways, it still is a great book.

I still remember the part with the mathematics professor, when he goes back to his hometown. How the professor simply states that if they break through the French line in the North; the entire French defense will crumble.
Apparently, he doesn't understand, "easier said than done."

I felt bad when he went home and couldn't let go of his soldier life.
Saying the civilian cloths were lose, and how he felt unsafe because he left his boots and gear at the door.
And how the screeching of street cars sounded like incoming shells. |

I like the part when the bucket of urine, spilled on the pants and shoes of the officer.
Darn, I forgot his name. The former postman, who became their commanding officer; and later the cook...

| I remember the first chapters, when over half of the soldiers in their regiment died, so they were asking for double rations of food. |
