I like the ancient Sumerian civilizations. They didn't last long, but I must admire how long they lasted without gaining new lands except for mines and fields to keep their market going.

No, they weren't small villages. Athens was famous for philosophy and the creators of democracy. Sparta was a land of generals, the land of strategy. Mycenae was a huge kingdom that almost covered today's Turkey. |

They weren't empires but they were big anyways. Big for that age.
"pas mi ellin varvar" - Who is not Greek is barbarian
That was racist but also true in that era. Greeks were way more advanced that any civilization. |

Empire: lands ruled by single authority: a group of nations, territories, or peoples ruled by a single authority, especially an emperor or empress
That's the definition, now it's your job to apply it properly.

It was like the others you mentioned probably a small fisher town. Case closed. --- Really... I am not nationalist. You must really hate me. And what kind of small fisher town has an army of 10k men?
No it wasn't like the movies, but still big.
They weren't 300 but 5k-7k and Persians were about 300k-500k and Spartans won because of the formation, place and strategy.
It's not my problem that your parents beat you while you sleep and you have anger-management problems and in a bad psycho-logic condition. I don't know why but really people in real life I bet don't like you and express your anger on the internet.
You have a serious problem. |

I think you have been misleaded by one of the earlier posts. They were trying to regard you that at the time they were not empires. Later though they progressed to become them?

@Ae
Ever heard of "The Brave 300"? The general and his army of Spartans stood to hold the Persians at the valley to protect the Athens-Sparta alliance. But yeah, their full army ranged somewhere from those numbers. And also, they won the war in the end by taking back the island of Sicily through their well-constructed boats, built for ramming into other ships, puncturing the hull and sinking them.

| The Greek civilization that we all learn about in school was just composed of a multitude of generally unaligned city-states. |
