Sumatra (Indonesia) - Mega-Earthquake in Sumatra: The Indonesian province of Aceh was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 8.7. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has issued for the entire Indian Ocean warning.
The quake occurred at a depth of 33 kilometers, about 370 kilometers from the island of Simeulue. The mega-quake is the strongest that has ever been measured.
Only two years ago, the earth trembled coast of Sumatra: On 30 September 2009 an earthquake measuring 7.6 shook the island. By collapsing buildings were several hundred people were killed.
The worst disaster occurred on Christmas Day 2004: An earthquake of magnitude 9.1 off the coast of Sumatra triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean horror. More than 230 000 people died, including 550 German tourists.

I'm from Indonesia and I'm sad. They also said that, once the actual center of the earth quake rises, it might reach a scale of 10.

| Did you guys know that some buildings can be "earthquake-proofed"? I'm not sure how, but I read something about it before in a book. Probably useless against an earthquake of that strength though. |

| Actually most proofed structures can withstand anything up to how much the rebar in the structure can flex, so it varies. The real problem is that most buildings aren't earthquake proof. |
