they don't get a lot of great spring days in oklahoma, but today was pretty nice. the air was clear and dry, and there was just the right amount of sun. everything looked so full and stately, somehow angular. a lovely play of light and shadow on the ground and between the trees. i was walking down this big winding road over a lake and i was listening to let's get out of this country by camera obscura on my mp3 and i got a little giddy. i remember getting this kind of cliched thought montage feeling while rounding a curve at the start of razzle dazzle rose. something about tracyanne's voice and the bubbling glistening taffy gauze behind it goes really well with afternoons like these, when everything's flat and blue and warm and soft and clear and bright and it's like "well my life is basically a mess but i suppose this is one of the nicer bits." tracyanne on "lloyd i'm ready to be heartbroken" is probably one of my ten favorite vocal performances ever. something about how still and sweet her voice sounds as it works through that panicked rush of syllables- when she falls into "cuz i can't see farther than my own nose at this moment," she's singing about some love @ff@ir whose nuances i'll never quite work out, but somehow i know exactly what she means, y'know? also if looks could kill is maybe the most perfect girl group revival/indie pop/death dirge for the human race crossover ever.

anyone wanna get coffee forever?

today i was buying some peanuts from wallgreen's and the cashier looked a little sad and when she asked how i was doing i was like "eh, well y'know, same ol' same ol' i'm kinda worried about my future and all that but at least there's a package of peanuts in my life now, one more handful of grease and protein with which to number the seconds- and whatever happens, for better or worse, i know they're numbered. but that aside, how are you? you're looking a little down, if i may be so bold." and she said "well, yeah, i guess i've been better," and i ignored the line forming behind me and i asked her: "well, what's wrong" and some hole with a watch and a frozen burrito cleared his throat and she said "well" (the hole probably needed to pick his kids up from soccer practice or something, it was probably cold and i guess they missed him. i shouldn't be such a judgmental hole all the time), she said "well, well i woke up this morning and when i looked in the mirror i found myself wondering what it was all for, why i get up every morning like this when i'm just going to lie down again, why clouds fight back the sun." somewhere, a bag of funyuns ruffled. she coughed and i said, "whatever's here and real and full is only so because we've made it so. tomorrow, night will lift again off the earth, though we want to hold it close, and something in our marrow will push us toward the sun. and if tonight the rivers go green with ice, and if the air shakes loose the heat of day, goes silver in the stillness of the crickets and the amber light, then only wait- motion holds fast to the shape of a frozen breath, the pallor of a dream which needs only the material. and trucks will rumble forth with ice sticking to them, and we'll look out a window of an airplane at the frozen air of a redeyed predawn, a chain of taxies in the fog. and everything happens again, but now in your eyes and now in a stranger's, and sometimes i think the world is a kind of stencil ready for an eternity of hands. but no matter; i'm going to wake up tomorrow and know only that i've talked to you now, and know only that i've managed to love you here surrounded by candy bars and people who think i talk too much, nothing will ever change anything, and this dream of an earth, this accident of heat and gravity, is a perfect and complex moment in triplicate, quadruplicate, a billion folds of which you're one and i'm one, and whatever happens now is eternal like a dream, and when i go home i'm going to eat my peanuts and i won't even need to think about what i've said now, because nothing is ever over and sleep is a piece of eternity." they were honey roasted.

how did strawberries become the most romanticizable of fruits, anyway? i prefer pineapples, but who the hell goes on about the the scent of pineapple wafting on the purple air? i think we people of the modern age have evolved an appropriate distaste for self-satisfied cynicism, but we haven't yet gotten past the middlebrow aesthetics that have taught us how to get our thoughts unpublished in style

oh, carol- don't let 'em white the roses out. don't let 'em teach the crows to fly and plug the evening up. don't let a bad july throw darts into the air you breathe; don't let sunflowers burst open in vain; don't leave apples to crack on concrete 'neath the weight of july. don't let a sour look push the honey from your tongue; don't grovel- season shines fresh in your face; the rivers turn on your command, the dams gush for you. sunlight bounds in from around every corner *the tops of houses massed 'twixt the spaces in the grass* icepicked out of blue cotton flowing. wrap yourself in snow, carol, and paint it pearl. i'll find you where the mirrors slant, where ash sticks to glass- i've got to learn to dance if it takes me all night

we're living out by the sea now, in a big green wooden house whose back door opens out onto the sand. the sand comes in with the screeching of the gulls and the moonlight and the breaking of the surf and the crabs suck on roots under the sand and shake the sand and sometimes you look out into the horizon and you wouldn't be able to tell what you were staring at if you didn't know already and if you couldn't hear the waves and the flapping of the gulls and if the smell of salt didn't make you think of buoys bobbing and boats on the waves, wide ships and wooden skiffs and fishing nets shiny with seaweed and the hugeness of the night sky above you as you lay laughing on one oar in a little rowboat with her name on the side, clarissa who looked out into the light, clarissa on the hill, as you laughed with the shaking of the boat and the swirling of the stars and, why not, the aurora borealis pressed up under the surface of the sea, rippling with the waves and bending around fish and blurring the starlight underneath you until it's all a sea of light. thank you

there's something astonishingly poignant about rebecca black. i'd be lying if i said she wasn't something of a hero to me.

fun fact: the black eyed peas are actually a fat guy in his basement with a girls gone wild tape, a poster of jacques derrida, and a macbook

i was a machine in a leather handbag in a discreet corner of a subway station in warsaw, an austere thing done up in wire and sheets of curving white plastic. i listened to thick coins click in the slots of the vending vending machine on the platform, and the patter of feet when the train came roaring to a halt, and although i had no eyes i could picture the far wall, rounded and sooty, and i could picture the sliding of the doors of the train cars, and i thought of tunnels bounding through stone, splayed out for darkness' sake, and i thought of echo. i tried not to succumb to vain pretenses, to think of it all as a kind of circulatory system for the fleshy streets and office parks above (and me as the heart), but there's romance even in that. i thought about the escalator from the platform up to another part of the station, the part with the turnstiles and the ticket windows and the little shops where they sold newspapers and bottled water and soda, and my circuits rattled open and closed

paisley-pink and wracked with chiaroscuro. kisses run long near the frigid harbor as chins find shoulders and temples necks. again a dull morning foists its bigness on my blinds. i'll find you soon, o empress of the pearlgrey cloud. the sky is filled with wires, and she's the chord they strike- she's the limit of my lifelong lazy sunday, the green sun thrown into dinnertime relief. red wine and rings and veils; tonight is a memory just like all the others, and a vague one at that. the fecund hitherings of asymptotic eyes, and they're skies that drag my infinities out
