Because S&I is boring today, I thought I'd post this to see where it goes.
So, for those who don't know, WebGL is a Web-based graphics library that extends JavaScript's capabilities to render interactive 3D objects embedded into web pages.
What I'm suggesting here is that all images on the site the represent a 3D object for the game - For example hats, shirts, place thumbnails, and even character avatars - to be rendered in WebGL instead of the standard static image we have. This would allow us to rotate and interact with the images in ways we can't do right now.
Examples of this would be: - Preview the entire hat, shirt, or gear before you buy. - View a full 360 degree panoramic of the place you're about to enter. This panoramic will not include players in ti, but it will include animated particle effects. - 3D character image that can be rotated and previewed just as the others. The avatar can also be animated to use whatever gear they are holding once every 30 seconds, and if none are held it would just use the walking animation?
In fact, ROBLOX could even use this to replace the download required to run ROBLOX - you could launch the game directly in your browser without any stand-alone downloads provided ROBLOX sets it up correctly.
Now, of course, there are limitations for this. First of all is that it could cause the client-side browser to lag on VERY old computers (Which I'm surprised still exist?). This is why it will be an option in your account settings, just like themes, that will be disabled be default.
Another limitation of this is that the web browser must support it. The only web browser that doesn't support it right now is Internet Explorer. First of all, if you're still using Internet Explorer you are a class-A idiot. Besides that, a simple work around would be if the browser cannot support it - even if the option is enabled - it will automatically disable the feature until you switch browsers.
And, lastly, the GPU must support shader models. The most common GPU on the market is currently an integrated Intel GPU. These GPUs support shaders - so it's a non-issue. Otherwise, unless you have a 3-dollar PCI GPU (WHICH YOU WON'T) there would be no reason why this should be an issue unless your GPU is currently on fire. However, just as a fail-safe, it would use the workaround stated above with browsers.
So.. Any takers..?

Flash requires you to download plugins, takes a lot of resources, long loading time, and really doesn't do what would be done with this efficiently in my opinion. Though I guess if ROBLOX prefers Flash..

"Y U NO JUST USE FLASH? :P"
Flash is weak. Why use Flash when Javascript runs naturally on web browsers.

WebGL>Flash They should still use the full program, because some video cards don't support OpenGL 2.0
On the other hand, I'm left-handed. |
