| Shotgun shells would be hard to come by, since everyone would have thought the same thing as you. Just go with a long blade, or perhaps a simple projectile device, like a bow, because it's easy to make arrows. |

| As a melee weapon, I'd' use a metal bat, long lasting, and blunt, and light. OR any other blunt object. |

| if I had to grab a melee weapon, I'd take a large kitchen knife and tie it to the end of a 3 foot or so pole |

@Hyphalaz
I'd take a weed-wacker with a circular saw blade affixed to the end.

@lumpy
and then your weed-wacker breaks because it wasn't meant for use against human beings
meanwhile, I'm still keeping zombies away at more than arm's length with my durable spear |

"'I'ma stab them zombies'
Yeah.... no."
Who said anything about stabbing them? With a long blade, a stabbing motion would be entirely ineffective. It's too slow, and it will fail to slow down much of anything.
Remember, kid, a zombie apocolypse is not about killing them all, it's about survivng. 'Flight' is the smart choice in this scenario, not 'fight'. The long blade is there to simply hack or slash at anything that can easily hold me back. |

@solid
on the contrary, stabbing a zombie in the heard would probably result in death very quickly
then again, that's with a spear
any sort of knife wouldn't be very helpful, because the reach doesn't extend very far beyond arm's length |

@Hyphalax: I like your spear idea. never thought of spears & javelins in this situation. They're light and generally longer than most melee weapons. It's brilliant. |

@Hyphalax: I'm talking about something longer, perhaps the length of a small claymore or maybe even just a machete. |

But stabbing wouldn't DO anything! Zombies are tough, they don't mind having holes poked in them.

@solid
and a spear can be made very easily and quickly, and is pretty durable, and doesn't rely on fuel
javelins probably wouldn't be very good though, it's kind of a waste to throw it |

Well, how do you kill a zombie exactly? I always thought it was cutting off the head, but I might be wrong. |

Eh, it could work, I'd prefer not to even dirty my hands with such crude ways of killing.

How do you know how zombies would act?

@Hyphalax: It can still be practical, throwing a javelin around. In very limited scenarios, but still. |
