If sandstone rock: Wind and small rock particles carried by the wind will slowly break down the rock into more small particles.

But that is after the whole rock cycle. Which involves the sand getting covered in more sand which in turn also gets covered in sand and so on and so forth until the sand is dragged back down to the mantel, where it will rise once again in a couple million years. So it will take somewhere around 300 million years for whatever we were talking about in the first place to come back to the surface.
