COOL FACTS & TEXAS BRAGS (clean version)
Opening overview: This post is in comment to Rogdata's post of Why Texans are so Proud. I am supporting him with this post, but this is not as much brag as his, these are my top 30 reasons of why I love Texas! These reasons can also be interesting & informing. Please read with an open mind! -------------------------------
(#1) NASA: Based in Houston, TX. NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. All the shuttle mission control as well as International Space Station operators of NASA are situated at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Columbia was the first successfully built space shuttle by NASA. The first mission of Columbia took place in April, 1981. Columbia met a tragic end on its 28th mission on February 1, 2003. The space shuttle disintegrated into pieces over Texas while it was trying a re-entry, killing the seven crew members on board. The future space projects of NASA include setting up of a permanent functional base on the moon by 2024 and to land human beings on Mars by 2037.
(#2) World Class bird-watching in Texas! Especially in Brazoria County, which has more species of bird than any other area in North America.
(#3) Tex-Mex food. The combination of authentic wild west food with rich Mexican food. Thus, creating what we call the taco. Your welcome.
(#4) South Padre Island: BEST sand castle making sand in the world, & best surfing waves in the Gulf Coast!
(#5) Best state shape for cookies
(#6) Taco Cabana founded in 1978 in San Antonio, TX. Undoubtedly the best fast-food Mexican restaurant in the South!
(#7) The Sons of Hermann Hall in Deep Ellum, Dallas was built in 1910 by the four Dallas lodges and is currently used by two lodges as well as being available for rent. It is currently a popular venue for the local music scene.
(#8) When Katrina refugees needed a place to stay, Texas was the first to offer, which again highlights our state motto: friendship!
(#9) Willie Nelson. Beloved by the most stonered Austin dreamer to the most rigid born-again Baptist, and no one bats an eye when he racks up another arrest.
(#10) "Failure is not an option." Yeah, it was never actually said by Gene Kranz, but it summed up generations of work at NASA that hopefully will not end with the shuttle era.
(#11) Friday Night Lights. Not the book, movie or show -- the real thing. High school football in small-town Texas is something everyone should experience at least once.
(#12) Crossing the Pedernales near the LBJ Ranch is a classic Hill Country moment and it's always redolent of history both happy and tragic.
(#13) When you say you're from Texas, no one in the world needs to ask where that is.
(#14) You want music festivals, SXSW, Austin City Limits and Summerfest are hard to beat.
(#15) From a windswept dustbowl like Lubbock, Buddy Holly unleashed pop rock on the world that is still the basis for new and great music.
(#16) Texas leads the nation in wind & sun energy, Houston, TX being named the 'Energy Capitol of the World'.
(#17) The odds of meeting an actual astronaut are higher in Houston than anywhere else.
(#18) Houston, Texas is the fourth most populous city in America.
(#19) The Houston-Galveston-Brazoria Metropolitan Area is larger than the state of New Jersey.
(#20) Houston has a theater district ranking in second, after New York City.
(#21) Chuck Norris. He doesnt sleep. He waits. And hes a Texas Ranger, dammit. ( fun brag is that everyone born in Texas is somehow related to Chuck Norris)
(#22) Houston is home to The Texas Medical Center, the largest in the world.
(#23) El Paso, TX is closer to the California border than it is to Dallas, TX.
(#24) King Ranch in Texas is larger than the state of Rhode Island.
(#25) The hamburger was invented in Athens, TX.
(#26) The Alamo, y'all; it's especially beautiful lit up at night
(#27) You will never see a one-story tall Virginia state flag flying over a Chevrolet Dealership.
(#28) Everything’s bigger in Texas, including the economy. Would you be proud of your state if it was continually ranked as one of the world’s top economies and had the most job growth out of all the other states? Not a big deal or anything, but according to the World Bank and the U.S. Department of Commerce, they estimate Texas’s GDP (gross domestic product) at $1.14 trillion, which makes it the world’s 14th largest economy. When your state has a bigger economy than a country, such as Australia (<3 y’all), you can’t help but feel a lot of love and a lot of pride for your state. Texas's economy would also be ahead of Russia, India and Mexico.
(#29) Texas is an amazing mixture of cowboys, Southern Belles, and hippies. It angers me to have the nation think we are all a bunch of gun-toting right wing nutjobs who want to secede from the union. But please world, don’t judge us by our governor(s) or Bush. Texas is darn good place to live.
(#30) Texas has one of the most interesting state animals: the Armadillo (An interesting bit of trivia about the armadillo is they always have four babies! They have one egg which splits into four and they either have four males or four females).
So, Texas, even with just these 30 facts, is pretty interesting! I would have alot more reasons of why I love Texas. I also have funny stories that ofcourse, could only happen here in Texas! I hope y'all visit Texas some time in your lifetime!
- If you could choose Texas's theme song, what would it be? Welcome by Phil Collins
- If you could create the official football team for Texas, what would they be named, and what colors would they wear? Name: Rangers Colors: navy blue & cream orange & white (adding a subjective) Icon: a five-point star in a circle (like the sheriff badge) |
