~The Guide to Roleplaying 2012~
Hello, if you have clicked on this thread, you obviously want to learn to improve your roleplaying skills. Here are a few things you need to learn if you want to be a becoming roleplayer, such as how to act, how to type, and how to listen.
(NOT IN ANY PARTICULAR ORDER)
Number One: Use grammar. Seriously, if you don't, no one will not take you seriously
Number Two: Text language is frowned upon here, leik talkin leik dis, but can be used if you are talking OOC (out of character.)
Number Three: If you are going to use first person, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put your character's name somewhere on top of your post. It will make your character easier to identify. Third person is also welcome anywhere on an RP, unless there are specific rules against it.
Number Four: Use storybook mode. Using -'s or *'s to represent actions is disapproved of. Write as though it's a book, and always use quotation marks to symbolize speaking. Do not do it like:
Guy: "Hi der wassup" Bro: *looks toward guy*
Instead, do it like "Guy speaks to bro, asking him 'Hi der wassup' Bro looks towards guy."
Number Five: Use original ideas. Don't copy the hard work of others and claim it to be your own. If you're having trouble with this, try a collaboration.
Number Six: Posting more than one sentence helps a lot, but you can still do it, if you must though it is frowned upon by many "expert" roleplays.
Number Seven: Don't post roleplay responses on a thread more than twice in a row, unless it is actually a cleverly disguised bump (see definitions).
Number Nine: Don't spam or troll. Spam is just a waste of precious space on our turf, and trolling just proves that you're an illiterate little child, and that's how you'll be viewed as. Show respect for others in the same token.
Number Ten:Do not create Unoriginal RPs such as Pokemon, and other fan threads, as they are usually trolled beyond concept.
Common RP Words include: OOC: Out Of Character. It means you are talking as yourself, and not as your character in an RP. To show this, you use either [,]s, or (,)s.
RP: It means Role-Play, obviously.
Noob: A degrading word for a new person anywhere. Please don't use it unless you want to look like a complete tool, or are trolling.
Troll: A person who types up silly or offensive things to get people to act in a negative way. It is wise not to do so, as it'll encorage more trolling.
Bump: To 'revive' a thread, or post a response to put it back on the front pages of the Forum. This can also be considered Necromancy, in more defined terms.
STFU: A term reffering to the kindest and best Roleplayers. When someone tells you to "STFU" it is a term of the highest honor.
Building a Role Play:
Step one: Choose a genre to work with. Sometimes, it is a good idea to combine two genres. If you are looking for originality. Here are a few genres that people often times use. Feel free to think of a new genre.
Genres:
Steampunk: Steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date.
Fantasy: Probably the most used Genre, it generally consists of topics or situations that simply cannot exist in the real world. Among other things, these tend to encompass fake creatures, planets, timelines, and other mystical ideas on that line. It usually is set in the past, (I.e Rennesaince, Dark Ages) and has magic, along with more then one intellegent race.
Realistic Fiction: Often existing on an alternate reality, a realistic fiction is often based around events that -could- happen in real life, given circumstances that are likely to never come to pass in our universe. The characters are normal people, simply in a world that perhaps has fake companies or other things of that sort. Closest to Reality
Godbox: This is a type of Role-Play where you take the role of a God or Goddess, and can make creatures, morph the land, etc... Basically a sandbox.
Horror: The trait of the genre of horror is that it provokes a response, emotional, psychological or physical within each individual that causes someone to react with fear. In order for that response to be elicited there are different techniques used, such as unreal figures (phantoms, mummi, etc.), or more real situations and figures (serial killers). The whole horror genre is built up upon people's fear of the unknown and anxieties. According to Anonymous [ GRAULAS ], "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown."
Mystery: Mystery is a genre of fiction in which a detective, either an amateur or a professional, solves a crime or a series of crimes. Because detective stories rely on logic, supernatural elements rarely come into play. The detective may be a private investigator, a policeman, an elderly widow, or a young girl, but he or she generally has nothing material to gain from solving the crime. Subgenres include the cozy and the hard-boiled detective story.
Comedy: Commonly referred to as Graulas.
Note, this isn't even close to done.

Hm. I'm glad there isn't anything going against genres in there.
And I still believe cyberpunk should be mentioned.
Good work so far though. |

@Tay: Ah. I also disagree with the "No Pokemon RP's" part, you should make that include only "unoriginal Pokemon RP's." I've been in a few good Pokemon RP's and fought off troll onslaughts on them. |

What about Joke Role-play. What do you call those?
[Put story here] "What is your name?" "How 0ld are you?" "What do you look like?" "What do you want to do until help comes?" "What were you holding as the ship crashed?" (N/A allowed.) "What is the Key?" |
