Well back then it's not like he knew this would happen, what are the odds that Finland would of somehow defeated a near superpower? Not much of a chance, but they pulled it off.

322,000 dead Soviet soldiers later... And Finnish casualties were under a fourth of that.

Finland was about to lose, if the Soviets continued to invade Finland, it would have fallen. That's why Finland sent a peace agreement to Russia.

I would of put my odds on Finland. Considering we know Stalin purged his best generals. Its why the CSA did so well during the opening moments of the ACW.

Russia's victory in the Winter War wasn't really a victory at all. They lost over 300,000 men fighting the much smaller Finnish army. The Soviet army was also lacking clear commands, due to Stalin's officer purges. This convinced Hitle-r to think that the U.S.S.R. was a 'paper tiger'

The USSR is known for high casualties in wartime. They send out millions of soldiers, whilst fighting a smaller army, and they lost or either lost LOTS of men.

I'm guessing Stalin did it for one reason.
Because no one would dare question him, and if they did, he'd just send millions to die for him. |

Actually, Stalin did it because he had already forced the Baltic republics "Estonia, Latvia, etc." to give him military bases. Finland refused, and a war broke out. 322K dead Soviets later, and the U.S.S.R. Wins the war.
