Why Contests are Broken and What We Can Do About Them

For those of you that don’t know, the Contest system that has been used for every building contest in the past couple years is one of ROBLOX’s most criticized features. Here, we will try to understand the fundamental flaws of it, and how we can change it for the better.

What’s wrong with it:

To find flaws, we must first see what people are complaining about. The main issue is that the places ranked the highest usually aren’t fun to play or unique, even though this is ideally what the top places should be. The only people who can be blamed for this are voters, so why do they do this?

The Problem with Voting:

It’s simple, really. Voters themselves are judged by this contest system with their ‘voting accuracy’. This exists, in part, to remove the influence of trolls that will all vote for the wrong places just because they can. However, voters are only judged based on how much they agree with other voters. Not only that, but they get rewards if their voting accuracy is high enough. Thus, many voters are somewhat selfish, mostly caring about if a place will give them a higher accuracy rather than if it’s actually a good place. Thus they will usually vote on places that include phrases liked ‘+3 Vote +5 if Played’ or ‘Ranked in Top 50!’. They are also less likely to vote on a place based on what is actually in the game, so few of the leading placemakers even bother with that. Sure, voters get more accuracy for visiting, but they could just enter and leave quickly without bothering to see what’s actually in the place.

Solutions:

-Remove rewards for voting entirely. Seems a bit extreme, I know, but this way voters will vote on places based on the actual quality of the place. There will be occasional trolls, but those guys were always there, and they never cared about voting accuracy to begin with. As for the people who will complain about this, well... people complain about everything. Even this post is mostly just one long big complaint.

-Have a ‘building period’ where placemakers can get their entries ready without hastily made places getting voted on first. This would give incentive for placemakers to spend time and effort on their entries without being put at a disadvantage.

These are all just suggestions. Let me know what you guys think.

I like it, explains clearly what the problem is and how to fix it. I honestly haven't been in the contest business, so I really don't care and won't bother getting more information about this and testing your facts. but they seem well constructed. and I do agree that rewarding people for voting is a horrid idea. so I support.

AND you could have a necesity to actually play the place. Most top ranked places are an empty baseplate and a cool thumbnail.

That's a good point, Pyro. Then again, there wouldn't be anything stopping people from visiting the place for 5 seconds and leaving before they actually saw anything.

Heck, even if we required people to stay a certain amount of time, that doesn't mean they'd have to spend the time actually playing the place.

Anthony: your reason is so reasonifying it reasons me to unreasonly ignore it

Also, you're so right, take this

http://www.roblox.com/Sky-Marshall-Sky-Battle-2-5-if-played-5th-place?id=53898692

Looks cool eh?
I just went inside it, and it's a mishmash of all the meshes and freemodels he could find, here's it described in detail:
You spawn on a giant mesh of an island, prolly a hat, with about a bilion biplane hats randomly thrown around you. You can walk to what looks like a freemodel airport. There's also about 6 randomly thrown in copies of the same space station, and crossroads, and a giant plane. All mashed toegether on clouds. There's no actual planes to drive. Nothing to do.

If this is what contests are, then for god's sake remove them already, roblox doesn't need this kind of crap.

also, lol at the rpg on first place, not even related, but at least finely made
