The Mason-Dixon Line
“Today, we are here to celebrate our ancestors who fought and died in the war of Northern aggression.” That was all I heard before the exited screams of the crowd caught up to me. It has been exactly 146 years since we annexed the north. And yet, these people couldn’t get enough of it. The wealthy, white men sat in the front, normally with their slave with them. You could occasionally see the slaves run off to get their masters food or water. I see this, and I think “Why do we still need slaves in the 21st century?” Ask that question to one of the men, he will have you arrested. And so far, a lot of people have. Before getting to in depth about our culture, I will tell you more about the past.
After the war, we had the strongest economy and military in the world. We soon discovered many uses for oil, such as the first automobile in 1890. Well, we didn’t have enough oil here in the CSA to support the cars, so the most reasonable was to annex Canada. The war was short, Great Britain and friends failed to come and help Canada in time, and the CSA marched proudly throughout Canada. We call that war the first resource war, lasting from 1900-1901. Well, the world didn’t take to kindly to that war, and soon they thought to boycott our products. Little did they know, we had started trading much more with Asia than any of them. So peace was established in the world for about 13 years. Then, in Sarajevo, the Archduke of Austria was killed, and the world jumped to arms and tried to find reliable countries. Being as most Europe was angry, we ended up allying with countries we traded with like Germany, China, and Taiwan. Finally, the first shots were fired and we were at war. The French moved forwards swiftly, but to no avail. They were pushed back to Paris, where the CSA’s expeditionary force had been waiting. We crushed the French, and pushed the remaining Allied forces out of mainland Europe. After agreements were made with Ireland, we moved through them and invaded the UK. We soon crushed the UK, and had little opposition left. We thought we were on top of the world when the remaining enemies signed the treaty of Berlin. The treaty stated that Germany kept all the land it wanted, and the rest was granted back to the countries that used to own them. Germany kept all of Scandinavia, most of Belgium and Netherlands, and parts of Eastern Europe. But after the war, the loss of such large economies brought economic hardships. So began the Great Depression. The CSA wasn’t effected as much as others, as they declared strict neutrality after seeing the horrors of the first world war. Soon, Adolf Hitlar gained power in Germany, and so began the Natsi period. After seeing him come into power, we decided we might as well ally with him. The former president died and the Republican party lost steam. Their neutrality was seen as oppressive, and most people wanted to get rid of it. So soon, the CSA allied with the axis powers. No one seemed to want to interfere with us, until Russia started showing off its huge military. Then, on September 6th, 1948, Russia launched its offensive into Europe. The battles were swift and brutal. Our troops never had a chance to support our allies. At the same time, Japan also showed off its big guns. We decided it would be easy to destroy them, so on December 11th, 1948 we launched a surprise attack on the Japanese pacific fleet. We thought the war would be easy, but the Japanese counter attacks were well planned and we started falling back. It was only after almost the whole Pacific ocean fell that we finally used our nuclear arsenal of about 5 Nuclear bombs on Japan. They surrendered, and we got back all our land, not to mention the fact we replaced the Japanese government with our own government. Life was okay during the post-war periods. With our allies eradicated by the Soviet Union, we didn’t have much to worry about. Soon, people started to question slavery, since they weren’t used for much now after better farming methods started to be used. So bill 784 was passed in congress, stating that black people couldn’t be used as slave labor, but they still didn’t count towards the population, and they still could be owned as servants. In the north, people were angry at the southern politics. How could they do this to black people, they said. So soon protests broke out and people demanded their right to free the servants. The protests were quelled, quite brutally, normally with several deaths in smaller protests, and upwards at about 100-300 at larger ones. The north decided it was time to get their own government back, and seceded from the union on July 28th, 1962. The CSA, fearing global relations would be severed as a result of war, just let them secede. But soon, many black servants started to disappear, and at the same time black population of the north went up. Since the wealthy servant owners normally had a lot of say in politics, the CSA finally gave up resisting and invaded the north. After about 4 months of fighting we knew that this war was going to be long and bloody. We hunkered down, and started drafting. Sadly, so did the USA and the war continued. After Richmond fell to the US, we quickly signed a peace treaty offered by the USA. We could still be a country, but even then we lost about 70% of our total land, and our economy was in shambles. We didn’t know what to do, so we just let it happen. Our economy slipped deeper into darkness, trade with the outside world ceased to exist, and anarchy spread through much of our land.
It is now the year 2012, and the land is still much the same as it was in the 70’s and 80’s. Anarchy and small rebellions are reported daily, marshall law has been in effect for years, and the Mason-Dixon line (the new border between the CSA and USA) is exactly like the border between North and South Korea. I am one of the lucky people in this god-forsaken country. I have a computer, a nice house, and a nice car. Most people would be happy to even have enough food to last them a week.
“Today, we are here to celebrate our ancestors who fought and died in the war of Northern aggression.” We still hear that every year. But so many people are starting to wonder, who was the real aggressor, and most hope for better changes in the future. I am hoping we can reunify with the US, their economy is successful, and they have great relations with the middle-east for oil and other commodities. The only thing that separates us from that freedom, money and oil is the Mason-Dixon line.
tl;dr: Die
Hope you take the time to read it, it is just a rough sketch right now. I have been interested in alternate realities for some time now, and anyone who likes that knows that the best of all alternate reality stories can be made branching from the American civil war. |

Yay, thanks.
I know it has some errors in it, I have to smooth them out. For instance, at one point I said "relation" when I meant "retaliation" |

I know about the racism that the Confederacy had. I added parts where the narrator would call them Black, I was going to have him call them something else, but it would have gotten me banned.
It is a alternative reality where the CSA defeated the USA at the battle of Gettysburg, and moved on to take over the US. It goes through the story line where instead of the normal WW1 and WW2, it ends up with the CSA allying with what were to be our enemies, and WW1 being won by the Axis, the Soviet Union taking over all of Europe during World War Two, and the time after the wars. |

| But with no other powers in the world (The CSA had a destroyed economy, the USA was just starting out) the Soviet Union had the biggest economy in the world. They would have no reason to fall. |
