Which is better, the free notepad++, the shareware Sublime Text 2, or the free SciTE? I kinda like Sublime Text 2 but is it worth 60 dollars to licence?

I'd suggest SciTE. But not the one that comes with Lua for Windows, the latest version, from the scite website.
The one that comes with Lua for Windows is outdated. The newest one is much nicer in my opinion. |

I like the syntax highlighting on SciTE, but sublime has good highlighting and some really cool features like minimap and just an overall good look.

The highlighting isn't really important, as you can change it for every editor and customize it to what you want.
As for the minimap, it is nice, but, do you really need a minimap? |

"The Developers worked hard to make it, they deserve to be paid for their work."
So you think that they deserve to be paid for their work... but you aren't going to pay them? At any rate, given that it's a pretty high cost I'm sure they would understand your not paying for it at the moment.

True, I am evaluating it, I'll but the licence when I get 60 bucks.

I personally use Notepad++ and customize my syntax highlighting to make it look decent as well as adding in a bunch of Roblox constructors to be highlighted. My personal preference.

I agree with enumeration, the syntax highlighting and ui are very good, plus linux support and unlimited per user license.

Hum, you know, the exact same syntax highlighting is available for Notepad++ and Gedit too... and many other editors..
As for Linux support, Gedit and SciTE both have that.
And as for unlimited licenses, well, Gedit, SciTE and Notepad++ are all open source, so that's not exactly a problem.
Black backgrounds and all that are impressive, but you can get them in other editors too, you know... |

If you can afford it, buy it. If you can't, buy it when you can. |

True, but in my opinion sublime has a good ui. Call me a n0b but me gusta.

I agree that it has a good UI. But, when you code, what really changes how fast and how effectively you code? The editor itself, or its UI?
Whether it has rounded corners and all that or not won't really change much about how productive you are. |

"As for Linux support, Gedit and SciTE both have that."
But gedit is a pretty rudimentary editor, it's designed to work everywhere and be simple, if you want to do more heavy-weight stuff in it it's not so good. Of the bunch of free editors the best one feature-wise is Notepad++, but I can't use it on Linux. |

While we're on the topic, is there any text editor that has an output of some kind that can use print() and display syntax errors?

@Stravant
Notepad++ is eliminated from my choices, precisely, as it isn't cross-platform. Considering I spend most of my time on GNU/Linux, I just can't use it.
As for Gedit, it isn't that much rudimentary. I'm currently using it with the Oblivion theme, which gives me a black background. I'm also using the snippets plugin and I've defined my own snippets for ROBLOX lua so I can quickly do some things (I've even added a snippet for my with function so I can use it quickly).
It also has auto completion and can automatically put matching braces and all that for you.
It isn't really that rudimentary, if you ask me. |

That would be easy enough to make for any editor that has an extension API. Just loadstring the source every so often to check for syntax problems. |

The command line. Compile lua 5.1 and use it in the command line. That's probably the best way to do it, really. There isn't really a point in being able to do it directly in the editor, trust me.
Gedit has a Python console, but no Lua console. You could probably find some plugin that allows you to get a normal console, and then, you could easily initiate a Lua console by just typing 'lua'.
Sublime Text also has a console, but I'm not sure how it works.
As for SciTE, you can easily edit the options so it lets you run files of any kind with any application, so you can make it able to run the current file as a Lua file. So you could just create a file and use it as a "console". |
