CHAPTER 1 A s I trotted through the dense woods, a wolf pup played with my swishing fluffy tail. “Maw Maw, when are we going to get home?” one little one squealed, tripping over a small branch. “Soon, Tigress,” I reassured her. The little pups I had had one day were all different looking; you would never guess that they were related. The oldest one, Petal, an albino female with icy blue eyes and gray paws, was very shy. The middle pup, Tigress, looked like a gray tiger with warm amber eyes. She was very adventurous and outgoing. Then, the youngest, Bramble, was a strong male that had green eyes with a brown with black dots coat. He was never afraid of anything. I, myself, had the purest white coat with very light brown speckles across my fur, making my violet eyes stand out. “Maw maw, it’s cold out here,” Petal whimpered. I grabbed her in my jaw and hoisted her onto my back. “Petal, you are getting a bit old for this!” I grunted under the weight of the 9-month-old wolf. Tigress bounced ahead of me, observing a bright red ladybug. “It’s like a splash of color against the dull snow!” she cheered. I always thought the winter would not be a good time for my family of five. The unforgiving forest had always hurt my pack; one or two pups would usually not make it. Although the winter brought blizzards and hail, it was a good way to store food and herbs. After a long hard winter, the berries and meat were always fresh and rich. A fine line of paw prints follow me as I trudged along the gray snow, awaiting for the camp to appear on the far horizon. As a tradition, pups get to first hunt when they are 9 months old- the age of Tigress, Petal, and Bramble. The sacred hunting ground for the experience was far away from any pack’s camp. Our pack, the Howling Night Wind pack, is the farthest away from the grounds. A set of fox paw prints headed towards the camp; there must be prey at the camp. My jaw gaped a bit at the thought of the juicy meat, the first proper meal that wasn’t berries for weeks. I licked up my saliva and turned to supervise the pups.
