Man, what the hell was there to do in this town anyways?

Bad enough that I barely know their language, bad enough that I had to penetrate crowds just to get on a subway train...

But this...

I was in a dark, wet alleyway, where I had stayed all night. I lit a cig, and peeked out from behind the dumpster I was hiding behind. The city had been engulfed in hell - burned out cars, rotten corpses littering the streets, the clatter of distant gunshots. The worst of this chaos was already over, but now it was just a matter of surviving the aftermath.

I figured it was safe to leave the alleyway, so I stepped out. Man, I could not have been more wrong. Three walking corpses, one with an eyeball hanging out of its socket, shuffled towards me. I took out my weapon - A sturdy steel monkey-wrench, and prepared to fall back. I took cover in a nearby convenience store. The place had been long-deserted. Within three days, raiders have obviously stolen any type of canned food, or for that matter, any type of food from the store. I didn't care - I did not sleep well. I thought I would find some refuge for once, and possibly some canned food to eat.

I took a single bold step inside, turning on my flashlight. I just saw magazines, many of them still on thier racks, all in a near-incomprehensible language, and all of them bloodstained. I didn't look where I was walking, so I stepped in something soft, but heavy. I looked down - the light from my flashlight pointed in just the right direction to allow me to look right in the glowing eyes of a man - twitching, seemingly alive.

I bent down closer to him, said one thing I happened to know how to say: "Daijoubu desuka?" There was a brief silence after I said that. But suddenly, like a fist from a ferocious boxer, his stiff hand grasped my left arm. I found myself dropping my flashlight, watching the light roll away from me. Its grasp was agonizing, and I thought he was going to break my arm. I thought right then and there that I was going to die to this nonliving beast. I however knew better than that - I was still brandishing my monkey wrench. I swung it, full force into the monster's face, like a tennis racket smashing a ball. It stumbled back, but got back on its feet in seconds. I spent those seconds attemting to recover my flashlight. I did so, but the monster was right behind me. I thought it was a good idea to quickly push it back in the face. with my flashlight. That decision saved my life - it gave me just enough time and room to stab my monkey wrench right in the eye socket of the beast, kililng it. I
knew it was lodged into its skull, there wasn't any hope of recovering it.

I did find one pack of cigs still unopened however - not a crushing loss there. I lit it up, and opened the partially-broken glass doors of the convenience store. I looked up into the smog-filled grey sky, and a news chopper flew close from the ground. As I walked out, I passed by a burnt out police car that I did not manage to see. I examined it to find a still-functioning radio, broadcasting an unclear message. I heard the words "Jieitai", and "Kyoto-eki", and with my limited knowledge of Japanese, I figured out what to do. I treated meyself to discovering a combat knife on the corpse of what seemed to be the driver. I shoved the knife into the corpse's head, to be sure that it would work - it went in as if the body was a clump of butter. I took the knife, and began to cautiously jog in the direction I was supposed to go.

My name is Griffith B. (Bauer) Dunne. I am, well I used to be, and exchange student from the 'States. And here I am, totally foreign nation of Japan, don't know what to do, tired, low on morale, and alone in the middle of hell.

BUT A CERTAIN MAGICAL INDEX IS AWESOME! HOW CAN YOU SAY NO TO READING IT?! On a serious note, I'm about halfway through volume 21 and it's awesome. Accelerator almost broke, Vento shows up again, and Angel fall from volume - what, 3 was it? - now plays a major role. AND HAMAZURA'S A MAIN CHARACTER! Most resourceful protagonist in the whole series, IMO.

Anyways, Chapter 2.

I lightly shuffled across what used to be a crowded, noisy sidewalk, with cafes, schoolgirls, and cyclists all peacefully going along with their day. Now I come across pure silence. I was isolated - anything that moved was a walking cadaver with the unrelenting intention of killing me.

As I reflected on this fact, I happened to see one of those cadavers as I turned my head up. It was about five meters away, just distant enough I thought to lunge at with my knife, and keep moving. It would be just like Call of Duty - those moments when you charge into your enemy, kill them with your knife, and run away. Unfortunately, my time with my Xbox did not help me much here - I aimed for the corpse's eye with my knife, and missed. I lost balance, and tripped over a rusty bicycle, falling into a puddle of mud. I got up fast, but the corpse was already onto me. Despite the razor-sharp knife in my hand, I felt unconfident facing a... a "zombie" for myself like this. I stepped towards it, and concentrating on the "zombie"'s temple as hard I could, made a backhanded stab, the blade going right into its nose. I stepped back, blood falling onto my jacket. It fell backwards, cracking its skull on the handlebars of the bicycle.

I was slightly out of breath from the fight - I panted, hands on my knees, and my head down. I looked up, and guess what? Another living corpse over my head. I jerked back, stepping back, with my knife out. And right then, I heard a somewhat loud voice: "ABUNAI!" I stepped back again, and got down. I heard a gunshot, about eight meters away - ear piercing, like some kind of earthshaking bass on the strongest subwoofers ever. The corpse fell back before I knew what was happening. I saw my savior behind his fallen body - A person my age, maybe a year older. He was clutching a smoking revolver. He was speaking at me in Japanese. I couldn't understand him, but from his gestures, I could tell that he was trying to get me to leave. Right after I got that, three ravenous living dead burst out of a door of some convenience store, and had the kid pinned down. He dropped his gun, but I decided not to grab it - too horrified by the sight of seeing the kid being eaten alive. I got away as far as I could before running out of breath.

I removed my jacket, and rested while taking cover for a bit inside a cafe with an open window in the front. I was wearing a T-Shirt under the jacket, with the logo "SKRILLEX" printed on the black cotton. I lit a cig, trying to compose my thoughts. The Jietai? The Self-Defense-Force? Was that what I heard in that radio broadcast? And they were at Kyoto-Eki? The train station? It made sense to me then, but I got thinking just now. The station, and its surrounding would easily be the most crowded part of the city. Wouldn't that mean a higher concentration of those... abominations? I thought a bit more - Kyoto is usually much more crowded than this, so why have I encoutnered only about ten or so monsters per block? Sure, I was trying to sneak around them, but that didn't make sense.

I was thinking about the geography of Kyoto. I was on the street where the Toji bus-line goes, meaning that Toji Temple is about twenty minutes away. However, to avoid most of the dangers on the streets, it would take at least three hours to reach Toji Temple. And even then, it's an additional hour to safely reach Kyoto Station.

Bottom line: I did not have a clue what to do.

When my character is thinking to himself, I like to space things out.

New paragraph on new topic.

That's what I do, at least.

Chapter 3

I stomped out my cig, and looked on the road again. At least thirty minutes should have passed. It was not cold at all - far from it, but I put my jacket back on anyways. I kept my knife in my right hand. I put my flashlight inside the backpack I have relied on since entering the country. The blade was as sharp as ever, despite already being used a few times. I looked down the road, and in the direction of dozens of ghouls down the road. A bus, burnt-out, and on its side, caught my eye. Out of common sense, I planned not to go down that road.

I stepped out of the window. I have gotten used to this feeling of isolation. Sure, it could have been the sight of a mob of ghouls that let me know I was not alone, but I still felt...relieved, compared to how I felt just an hour ago. I took another path that led me into a series of homes. I always found it interesting how streets in Japan always manage to have small paths leading into the direction of houses after houses. I passed by them, hearing the raspy snarls of ghouls behind some of the doors.

Down the path was one ghoul, blocking my way. I was considering doing some kind of super-stealthy trick that would lead me to eventually stabbing the ghoul in the back of my head, but the ghoul spotted me, and came in my direction. This time, I was prepared. I walked towards it, holding my combat knife like an icepick, and lunged. It was a clean kill - two seconds, and I knew it was down.

I was now on one of the main roads again. I stumbled upon a police barricade, with several police cars lined up. There was blood and bodies all over the barricade, and shell casings on the blood-stained road. I approached it, in hopes of finding useful items. I found a police car with a partially ajar door. One dead police officer fell out of one of the car. His pistol, with the safety on, fell with him.

Chapter 4

The handgun... A Glock 19 pistol, and half a clip still remaining. I knew exactly how to work out the gun, having watched Die Hard many times. I searched the car for more ammunition, but failed to find any. I felt okay. I had a gun, and having only eight rounds was more than enough. I carried on, upon the sight of about six shuffling ghouls coming from the corner of my peripheral vision.

The rest of the day was spent navigating the hellish labyrinth that were the streets. Over the course of my journey of climbing chainlink fences and running through back-allies, I fired about five of my eight rounds. Unfortunately, the pistol I had was not nearly as easy to fire as I have seen in movies. At first, I thought it was easy enough to fire with my knife in my left hand with the pistol in my right hand, though it proved too difficult to simply fire from one arm. Firing the pistol always caused a eardrum-breaking explosion that would always startle me a bit. To make matters worse, the noise always would draw ghouls - five to fifty of them to me. I found myself always having to hide in some building every time I fired the gun. After all of those mistakes, I just found myself going back to stabbing ghouls in the face.

The sun was going down when a scramble crossing near Kyoto station was in sight. However, something was wrong. Suddenly, the streets that I knew were deserted were not so empty anymore. Ghouls littered the area near that crossing - hundreds of them, all the way to the station. Navigating a route to the station would be hellish. I stayed inside the 7-11 attempting to devise a plan. My concentration was broken by gunfire - automatic gunfire that did not seem to end.

That was when it hit me - the Self-Defense-Force was unquestionably near the station. My salvation was there, but it was just a matter of reaching the station.

I looked another look at the horde, - pretty scary sight. Even with every member of the Self-Defense Force covering my butt, there would be no way in hell I would be able to get through that crowd on my own. I climbed out of the window of the 7-11 nonetheless.

Terrible timing - I'll say that. A gust of wind came from where the horde was to where I was. Every ghoul there suddenly took a look at me, like ravenous dogs starring at a steak. A split second later, they similtaneously gave out their hellish battlecry of a snarl, and came shuffling in my direction.

I hauled my butt out of the area near the crossing, but I was surrounded in seemlingly all but one direction, and it was not in the direction of the station. My flight-or-flight senses came in full-burner. I climbed a chain-link fence

where a bicycle store was, trying to lose the ghouls by shufting through many abandonned cars on the street. I was surprised at how fast on their feet the ghouls were, but I still managed to keep a safe distance between them. There were many ghouls that I found facing my de-facto retreating route. I decided to fire my remaining rounds from my Glock to keep a few of the ghouls at bay - there was no point of creating a bit more noise if I was already being chased. It would have been too time-consuming and dangerous to try to stab each ghoul in the temple. I figured that there would be another savage horde waiting to devour me at To-Ji Temple, where I happened to be going in the direction in.

The pagoda of the temple was in sight, the top few tiers seeminly torn off by some kind of explosion. Only 200 or so meters left! The one thing that kept me going in that direction was the hopeful illusion of survivors, given by several gunshots fired one after another seemingly from the temple. I was finally in range of the bloodstained gate of the temple, marked by the various human remains and limbs littered around the enterance. The gunfire did not end and was also getting louder. I finally confirmed a few survivors to be inside. It was just a question of whether or not they would keep me safe, or shoot me like how they Self-Defense-force fires the ghouls.

The gunfire seemed to cease right when I was in front of one of the many entrances of the temple. The once pristine and beautiful gardens of Toji Temple had been absolutely desecrated - the stone paths were covered with bodies, organs, flesh, and even live ghouls too thrashed to move. The ponds of water were red with the blood of the enemy. The cherry blossom trees were covered in red stains, and bullet casings littering the grass like bread crumbs.

I looked behind myself quickly, wondering if any of the living dead have continued to follow me. Sure enough, a familiar looking horde was right behind me by a distance of about thirty meters. I jogged inside the temple, taking cover near a cluster of trees. It was silent after that, aside from the snarls of the ghouls that were beginning to enter the temple's groudns. I thought I could rest for a minute, or possibly more within the safety of the plants I was hiding under.

That silence was broken by a loud "BANG". I re-focused just in time to see three tracer bullets, and three more "BANG"s. I was being fired at! I looked around for more cover, and quickly found some more behind an abandonned white van. I considered firing back at the people firing at me, but I remembered that I was out of bullets as I pulled out my Glock. My chances of surviving a fight with only a combat knife against possibly several armed men were zilch. I sighed to myself, my mind racing furiously wondering what to say. I finally could not think of anything, and so, I cried out in English: "I'M NOT ONE OF THEM!!!"

There was a silence for about five seconds, in which I was sweating profusely, legs shaking, scared for my life. And then, I heard another voice in accented, but recognizable English: "PROVE IT!". The voice was unfriendly, but soothing. I tossed my Glock from behind the van, and also tossed my knife. I moved out from behind the van with my hands up. One dark-skinned, muscular bald man with a slick, recognizable M4 Carbine walked up to me. From the way he was speaking to the others in Japanese, I could tell that it was him who was shouting at me in English.

"So you are not infected?" he asked in a gruff voice, with the stench of nicotine. I wondered what he meant. "Infected?" I asked. He then threatened to smash me with the back of his M4. "Don't act like you don't know what's happening.", he warned me. "Now just remove your clothes, we'll have to check for bites." he demanded. Another man with an "AC/DC" T-shirt and a M1911 pistol pointed his gun at me, starring at me suspiciously.

Not bad. Just don't forget to start a new paragraph every time someone else speaks. It just looks better.
