| For two years in World War One, Latvian Riflemen held back the invading Germans. The Germans, taking heavy losses and their forces needing to be diverted to the western front, gassed the Latvians and advanced. |

| As little as I doubt such a thing, you should cite your sources, and provide specific dates, as it's hard to follow up on such claims otherwise... |

This isn't the resource I actually got the information from, (I read it in a book on Latvia that I checked out in the school library) but it states the important facts about it. |

During World War I, fierce battles occurred on what is known as Death Island between Latvian riflemen and the more powerful German army.
On December 25, 1916, the Germans used fatal gases against the riflemen. To commemorate these events, a monument was installed on the northern shore of the island in memory of the fallen Latvian riflemen in 1924.
It was designed by the architect Eižens Laube.
Before the Rīga hydroelectric power plant was built, Death Island was a peninsula, but now it is a proper island which can only be reached by boat. The island contains trenches, old graves and gypsum quarries.

| There is also a heavy metal song called "Naves Sala, Latvian Riflemen" by Skyforger. Perhaps you new age people can relate to that better. |

Some more information stated by the band (they didn't just make the song for no reason.)

@Boeing717
I was mistaken that Naves Sala was the first place. It was actually very early in the war, at the start of 1915 that the Germans first used gas. |
