Yes, it does. You see, it's rather a question whether sound is a technical detail or merely a matter of perception. Now, if you're counting it as a matter of perception, then yes, someone has to be there to hear it. But for counting the sound as the manipulation of air waves and molecules bouncing off each other, then no, nobody has to be there for a sound to exist. |

It makes a sound. You have to be stupid not to know that. You're just not in the range of the sound vibrations to hear it.

@Goomba
What doesn't it? A ROBLOXian posted on a ROBLOX forum, and is getting responses from ROBLOXians.

| The real question is, would those vibrations be sound if ears of some organism didn't precieve it? Afterall, if we go by your definition everything is sound due to the string theory. However, we cannot hear everything. (Oh my, that wall that is sitting in the corner is sounding quite fine.) |

Then, Via that logic, sound does not exist, as everything is already sound. Sound, therefore, is a material we can hold.
Oh, and the question is based off of a quantum physics problem. Quantum physics dictacts that while not everything has an observer, if something happens that isn't observed, then it cannot be proved definate, therefore, if a tree fell in a forest, and nobody was around to hear it, it both makes a sound, and doesn't make a sound, until observed. However, since sound is finite, it will never be oberved. Therefore, it will forever be unknown. THAT is the base of this question, which everybody seems to of overlooked. |

It depends. If there was no sound, than the tree probably didn't fall at all. This would create two parallel universes, one where there was a sound and the tree fell, and one where the there was no sound and the tree did not fall. When someone, lets say a lumberjack, goes into the forest and catches a glimpse of this tree, one universe will suddenly warp into our universe, thus making the tree either fallen or not fallen.

Rowpunk, a brick isn't soundwaves. A cafe isn't soundwaves. Air isn't soundwaves. But soundwaves don't have to be heard to exist. |

@HiperPower Well now that you have discovered it, the parallel universe where I didn't steal it ceased to exist.
And yes, I did. I also stole a dinosaur. :D

@gabrielhud
He is arguing that waves which are not percieved by organism's ears are still sound. However, everything is made up of waves, therefore, everything is sound.
Since everything vibrates, everything can be considered sound by this definition, even if it isn't percieved by ears. That is all. |
