| I'm thinking of building a computer, and the motherboard I want is an ASUS Sabertooth X58. It says it only supports Intel i7 and Intel i7 Extreme processors. I don't necessarily want to get either of those, since they're overpriced. The processor I'd like to have is an AMD Phenom II. Will the ASUS Sabertooth support the Phenom II? Are they just trying to scam me into buying an Intel processor? |

No, you can't just drop-in replace AMD vs Intel processors, the motherboards supporting each have completely different sockets on them. In fact, you won't even be able to physically fit an AMD processor into an Intel board or vice-versa.
Even within AMD/Intels lines, the processors are broken up into "Families" which are usually incompatible with one and other, for instance, an i5 / i7 processor may fit in the same socket, but an old Pentium chip definitely won't fit in an i5/i7 socket. |

| Well, that sucks...I really don't want to spend over $300 on a processor...but oh well. |

@stravant
If there's two processors (such as a P4 and an Intel Core 2 Duo), and they both have the same architecture, TDP, voltage, socket, etc, could you swap them out and use them interchangeably in the same machine? |

Just look at the socket specification: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU_socket
Every Motherboard tells you what socket type is has, and every processor tells you what socket type it needs. |

| Just a random question, but does an HDMI output on a GPU carry audio as well? |
