Strangely it seems the generation below me is less technologically advanced and up to date with current affairs. Any opinions on it? Was anyone protesting or going to? |

Bah stop acting like you know everything, It has been signed but can be repealed. It has not been put into effect. It is also not only America who has signed it but 38 other countries yes?
And explain to me then why either SOPA or PIPA was any worse? |

Although I'm not an official or authority, I'll try my best.
It gives the government the right to shut down any website because something on it was from something copyrighted. So, say someone posted a picture on facebook of something copyrighted, the WHOLE website could be shut down. ROBLOX could be shut down. It would sensor the web.
I recommend you see the videos on it. |

You realise ACTA is the same but more broad? In fact, they didn't need to pass SOPA in order to take down MegaUpload and sentence the owner to 50 years imprisonment.

To make sure, "Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement"
That's what it is right? Because if it is, I don't see any relation for it to do anything to the internet. |

People are over-reacting about ACTA. It's not going to affect our daily Internet lives. If it does in anyway, it would be very minor, and would be forgotten within a day or two.

ACTA was passed in fricken October....
The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is a plurilateral agreement for the purpose of establishing international standards for intellectual property rights enforcement. The agreement aims to establish an international legal framework for targeting counterfeit goods, generic medicines and copyright infringement on the Internet, and would create a new governing body outside existing forums, such as the World Trade Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, or the United Nations.

The name is misleading, It apply's to intellectual property, This includes the sharing of ideas over the internet, say you quote a speech in a blog, that would infringe the terms of ACTA and strong action could be taken against you under law of copyright. Torrenting and music distribution will also become highly illegal and ISP will be required to inspect all package data and inform the authorities if you are suspected of some kind of internet piracy.
As you also pointed out it also does not only apply to the internet but to everyday life. But of course the only difference is, realistically you won't be caught when its over the internet.
and this if it passes and goes into full effect will not be just a forgotten thing. Not that I have much to hide but I do not like the idea of my internet provider seeing absolutely everything I do. |
