It has only been a year since the Aldrun Empire collapsed from within, the direct result of a crippling rebellion of the Aldrun Trader Caste. The empire, consisting of many species including humans, humanoids, and varieties of aliens, splintered into many warring factions, each wishing to come out on top as the New Aldrun Empire. Of course, there are those who do not wish for power, simply wealth. And a big heap of wealth as well. There are those who keep to themselves, others who conquer and destroy with fleets of starships, others who cash in on the war by hiring out their services to the highest bidder. Unfortunately, you've been caught in this war torn, desperate star nebula. You've got some ships, money, and a good amount of people ready to support you. Are you going to risk it and try for the glory of establishing an empire? Of course you are.
This takes place in star nebula in which the Aldrun Empire was situated. A star nebula has many star systems you can travel to using light-phasing technology. You begin as a minor faction that has managed to re-organize itself and begin to make something of the Aldrun Empire in order to assist itself in becoming a force to be reckoned with in the nebula. There are numerous other factions in your way, both minor and major.
Your new faction will use the former empire's technology for a long time until you can produce your own technology, which is going to take a long time as well.
Also, military remnants of the Aldrun Empire have banded together to form the Pirate faction, a large mercenary faction that has a lot of the older kinds of the Aldrun Empire's technology, and specializes in deploying modified ships. Unfortunately, they rely on the old technology, which means they lack shields and use only lasers, autocannons, and primitive rockets. Pirates are led by Pirate Lords who control many Pirate Bases, asteroids with ship-constructing complexes to produce Pirate ships. Pirates are mercenaries, and can be hired to do your dirty work for you.
Minor factions inhabit a large portion of the remaining planets, usually with a small militia fleet to defend itself. They are not tough opponents, but may gang up on you.
Major factions span several planets and even star systems and generally have a large fleet of ships and permanent planetary defense systems. These factions are more dangerous and should be approached cautiously.
You can colonize planets and asteroids to produce a fleet and establish a foothold. You begin with one planet of you choice and you can assign Infrastructure points to upgrade your planet. You can buy more with credits earned in missions by major factions and ransacking minor factions.
Ships form your fleet which you use to attack and defend your colonies. Ships come in several basic forms, and each form can be upgraded to higher levels which give them boosts. The ships have numerical stats, but these act only as a guide to how it acts. You don't need to worry about how much damage so-and-so does how much health it has. Just be reasonable. A level 1 ship can't take on a level 4, let alone a level 10 (Level 10 is the maximum). Ships you build have the same level as the number of Ship factories there are.
If you wish to have a different playstyle, let me know.

(Yes. I totally stole all of this from a game. It's because it's nearly midnight, and I'm way too tired to make something more unique. At least my character is my own, though.) |

I stood there, looking at my ship. It had been a month since I had seen it. The government confiscated it after I landed. My droid was still on board. I hope it hasn't been memory wiped. "Well, Captain. Where do we go now?" I look at Corso. His rifle is slung across his back, but the barrel is still smoking from our recent firefight. "I don't really know, Corso. As long as I can see the stars, I want to be there." Corso smiles. "I agree. Let's get in there, before security shows up." We board the ship, and Corso mans the bottom turret, to fend off anyone who comes near. I struggle with the controls, trying to get the old, beaten up engines to activate. I finally activate the engines, but I hear blaster fire. "Captain, hurry up!" "I'm trying!" The engines slowly power up, and the freighter is lifted from the ground. 5 feet, then 10 feet, until the engines how enough power to exit the hanger. We blast out of the hanger, and it takes only a few minutes for some fighters to give chase. I angle us upwards, shooting upwards. Waiting to clear the atmosphere, I charge up the FTL drives. "Corso! Keep shooting! Don't let them get a lock on us!" I see the faintest hint of stars when the FTL drives reach max. "Corso, we're leaving!" He slides down the ladder, dashing straight to the co-pilot's chair, and flips a few switches. "We're clear!" I push down the lever, just as Seetoo enters the cockpit. "Master Vlancern! You're ba-" The ship lurches to FTL, and Seetoo is flung against the wall. The gravity quickly stabilizes, and we help Seetoo up. "Captain." I turn to face Corso. His grin tells me everything. "I know. It's good to be back." |

In the distance, there was another ship approaching. Judging from the lack of faction colors, it was probably a bandit ship, belonging to those who prey on lone trade ships. As it neared to your ship, you could identify the make and the way it is flying, how experienced the crew is.
Enemy:
Cobalt Light Frigate (Dallmoor Bandits) Level: 1 Hull: 635 Armor: 2 Shields: 370 Weapons: Laser Cannons (2) Damage: 10 per second
It's a Cobalt Light Frigate, originally the cannon fodder for the Aldrun Military. Boasting a thick hull and damaging cannons, it won't be easy to take down in a straight-forward fight, but it is possible. The crew seems fresh, this is probably their first battle. |

(Very well. As a beginner's ship, yours is powerful, but cannot compare to some other ships.)

The Cobalt returned fire, the lasers smashing into your shielding, but deflecting with no real damage. Their shielding took a massive beating through your lasers.
The Cobalt turned around, and fled. Hopefully he isn't bringing his friends. |

"Captain. FTL is ready." "Good." I activate the FTL, and the ship enters the strange blue hallway of FTL Space. |

You end up in a desolate part of space. In the distance you can see a few ships milling about around an asteroid with a building orbiting it. It appears to be a Trade Port. Hopefully those ships are not hostile.
Neutral:
Trade Ship (Level 1) (4) Cobalt Light Frigate (Level 2) (2) Javelis LRM Frigate (Level 3) (2) Garda Flak Frigate (Level 1) (2) Krosov Siege Frigate (Level 7) (1) |

It bears white colors, signalling that it belongs to a minor faction. Most minor factions use white colors and rely on ship signals to determine who is who. Major factions use a variety of colors and personal insignia.
In the distance, you can see a Krosov Siege Frigate flying aimlessly. It is bearing the colors of a major faction, dark green with an emblem of a black cross. The ship looks totally lost, or it is indecisive in whether or not to attack the Trade Port, as there is a Gauss Defense Platform guarding the Trade Port. |

I slowly approach the larger Frigate. "Seetoo, search your database for information on Krosov Siege Frigates, as well as the emblem on it's side." |

The faction is the Trade Coalition, the remnants of the rebellion that brought down the Aldrun Empire.

| Krosov Siege Frigates are used in bombing planets, or the planet's structures. They are pretty tough to take down, and have rather good shielding. Their weapon against ships, a heavy laser cannon, is not very accurate. The main danger lies in if they get close enough to launch nuclear missiles at things. Those are extremely deadly. |

On a holographic display, a bearded man in an officer's jacket decorated with a scattering of medals appears. He seems disgruntled and angry.
"Who are you and what are you doing here? Fly any closer and I'll be forced to blast you." |

| "Oh, I don't think you want too. What is a bombing frigate doing outside a tradeport? Especially one so clearly in the military?" I gesture at the medals on his jacket. |

He raised a fist at you and shook it in fury.
"Don't play games with me, boy! By the order of the Trade Coalition, these "businessmen" who run the Trade Port must be eliminated. If you get in the way, you'll be ash quicker than you can blink. Now tell me who you are and what you're doing here, before I clap you in chains!" |

| "I'm Captain Vlancern, and I think that you've given me all the information I need." I close the channel and back up a little bit, where the nukes can't reach me. "Okay, Corso. We need to aim for that place there. That's where the Nukes are. We eliminate them, we're good to go." |

| The Krosov lurches forward aggressively, towards the Gauss Defense Platform. The Trade Port begins flashing red sirens, as Trade Ships fly out of the building and jump to different locations in space. The militia ships also fly forward to engage the Krosov. It wasn't long until the two sides converged and opened fire upon each other. |

The ship refuses to respond. The Krosov is proving more durable than originally thought, as the shielding deflects lasers and autocannon rounds. Though, the Krosov was still taking a lot of fire.
Suddenly, the militia ships withdrew, jumping away to safety. From the way they disbanded and fled, they were in sheer panic. The Gauss Defense Platform and the Trade Port ejected small escape pods that jumped away as well, while the Krosov turned to aim at you. |

I dart in towards the ship. "CAPTAIN! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!" "Trust me, Corso!" I dive towards a small opening in the side of the ship. A docking bay. |
