This is adressed to the 3 people who care.
What is 1/0?
Well, the answer is pretty simple.
Let y = 1/x.
Now, let's do a few examples: x = 5, y = 1/5 x = 4, y = 1/4 x = 3, y = 1/3 ...but what happens when x gets closer and closer to 0? x = 1, y = 1 x = .5, y = 2 x = .001, y = 1000 x = .000001, y = 1,000,000
Now imagine a decimal, which has an infinite amount of zeros, followed by a 1 at the very last digit.
.00000000000000...0000001 (remember ... means "and so on") Which can be represented as 1/infinity. x = 1/infinity, y = infinity Which is technically true. And 1/infinity is practically zero.
So, you might argue that 1/0 = infinity...right? Actually, you're still wrong. x = -3, y = -1/3 x = -2, y = -1/2 x = -1, y = -1 ... x = -1/inf, y = -infinity
Negative infinity is likely a new concept to you, but I bet you know what it means.
Now, if 1/inf = 0, then -1/inf MUST equal 0 also. (Remember, it doesn't straight up equal 0, it just means that it's so insignificant that it might as well be 0).
So we have two answers here for 1/0. Positive infinity, and negative infinity. Since 1/0 is TECHNICALLY rational (1 and 0 are both integers and they are both in a ratio) yet has two radically different answers, the answer is undefined.
TL;DR: 1/0 has two answers, positive and negative infinity. Since 1/0 is a rational number with two answers, the answer is undefined. No black holes are going to open. |
