I have Aspergers, and I have Autism. Both are considered mild, but are they really? My current statement: People with Autism and other brain disorders are the most unfairly treated people in the world.
In a way, it's like the entire world's government is being racist to them because they don't understand them. Before you stop reading and think I'm crazy, I'm not. Let's start with the school systems.
First, you won't deny that the school has to deal with a very large number of students with not as many staff on a daily basis, correct? In order to keep the order going in the system, each and every student must be treated the same, making it a lot easier for the staff and for most students. Now, I'm about to argue here that schools are among the worst, but I am only in high school. However, 6 years of slowly understanding how unfair these people, and myself, are being treated has made me determined to talk about this, and I will many times.
My school doesn't teach a course on Autism. Nor does it on brain disorders, in which Autism would be a couple units, and I'd be happy with that. Instead, during freshman year, there is a class called Freshman Seminar. There are four courses in health that take up about 9 weeks each: Writing, Strengths, Study Skills(I might be wrong on this one), and Health. By the time I got to health, I was so excited to see how they would talk about Autism. I waited about 5 grueling weeks. Finally, they day came. They teacher put it up on the projector, I was estatic in my own mind. Guess how long this lesson about Autism went on? 20 MINUTES. THAT'S IT. All this covered was that people with Autism have something wrong with their brains and that there are mild ones and low functioning ones. I was stunned. I could think of nothing else the entire day except about how wrong that Autism was displayed. The teacher practically hurried on the lesson! I was stunned then, I'm furious now.
Next, let's talk about the Friendship Society. This is a club that was formed in our school, makes up around 40 people or so including students and staff. It even has it's own page on Face book. Now you're thinking: The school district has to nice to Autistic people if they are supporting this. I never said they were supporting it. The teacher who leads this group is one of the nicest women I've ever met, she's always there to support us. Always. Guess what? She founded the club on her own. She recieves no help from the school. Period. The school didn't even help her start it. Before her, all of the people with a brain disorder in my school were suffering plenty. They still are, but with her around, it's less. However, the job is stressful to her, and she has her bad days, but she always tries her hardest to keep a smile on her face. I feel really, really bad for her. It's those kind of people that should be leading the world.
Now I'm a Junior, and I have taken a course in Psychology. I managed to get the best Psychology teacher in the school also. I was convinced that there would be a unit dedicated to Autism and Brain Disorders. Again, I was wrong. Autism was talked about for a day. Brain Disorders, I remember, were barely mentioned. By the end of that class, I was ready to break down the door of the people who run this school.
How did I get so caught up in all of this? It started in 6th grade. I'm sure most of you remember this as your worst year in Middle School. It was for me. I moved down there from the Mountains where I had many friends. When I moved in, the first day went well, everyone accepted me and wanted to be my friend. By the end of that day, I was an outcast. My major weakness back then was that I was too happy, too cheerful... and too gullible. Now I'm not being racist here, but there was a group of mostly mexicans that would call me over to where they were every now and then. It was always a prank to make them laugh. One time they tricked me into cussing out random students in spanish. I was told that I was "welcoming" them to the club. One day, this kid Jelani(Today we don't talk to each other, in 6th he was a bully, in 7th he was a "friend", and in 8th he was a bully) had taken his water bottle and threw a lot of water my way. Two seconds later, I was the laughing stock, Jelani saying that I had "Peed" my pants. Almost the whole front side was soaked. I don't remember the rest of that day. Now, on Day 2 is when I became an outcast. People mistaked my name for something else, since it is not a common name. Today, it doesn't bother me, I sometimes like it. Back then however, one day I snapped. I don't remember it, but I was told that I ran around screaming and hitting people. Being small, I didn't do any damage, but I made a lot of enemies that day.
By 9th grade, I understood was Autism was. By 10th, I was going through huge frustration, and the 10th was important, because it taught me many things through painful experience. By 11th, which I am in now, I now know my set goal in life, at long last. I am going to help these people with Autism and Brain Disorders because they are the #1 most UNFAIR PEOPLE TREATED IN THE WORLD.
If you have any questions, pm me.

| What I fricking hate is how people make people with Autism look like they are like a seperate race of humans. I have seen a cooking book that says. THINGS THAT AUTISTIC PEOPLE LIKE TO EAT. For gods sake I there isn't anything wrong with people with Autism other then slight social disabilities. |
