After being told by at least one person that I needed to diversify my extra-curricular actives, I joined Model UN. I'm going to one conference, for which I had to cancel a Policy Tournament. I'm not amused, to say the least.
I though it'd be a legitimate event, but I don't think it actually is - and I really, really want to be wrong, because it's too late for me to back down. If you're in MUN, please answer these questions...
- How the heck do you win? Are there points? This whole "it's an educational simulation <3 :D :D <3" thing is too asinine to be true. There *has* to be some form of competition or a mechanism to win.
- Evidence? In Policy & LD debate, you read craptons of evidence that is read selectively for maximum word economy. Do those Positional Papers or whatever the heck you call them cite research? CAN they?
- How long are the speeches, on average? Can my partner and I interrupt people if they're incoherent and are absolute imbeciles? The videos I've watched seem to be people talking AT each other. |

| Never interrupt a opponent EVER. Don't look at your opponent. Use big words,Refute arguements before they bring them up. |

... can I win? I see no point if there's no competition.

| Position papers are entirely useless. I went to one conference where a landslide victory happened for a working paper recommending landmines be used to defend borders. |

What I enjoy about Model UN is that you don't have to worry about winning, I usually just troll the crap out of everyone and enrage people by suggesting resolutions that seem so far out.
Like last year I proposed a resolution to have NATO intervene in Sudan to bring South Sudan back under control.

Because competition ensures things like that ^ don't happen.
So there's no way to win. Awesome. Which means my transcript will have "Model UN" on it with no indication of whether I'm good or not at it. Back to Policy. |

YES.
Colleges do not give a flip if you were a member of a simulative experience and you were terrible at it! Winning mechanisms allow those who are good to be recognized for it. That's why Policy and LD debate are very influential in college acceptance, especially for TOC outrounds teams - it's intensely educational, and if you're good at it, you're *really good.*
Plus, without a winning mechanism, there's no retribution for just being obnoxious. See the post above my last one - with the threat of losing, you are encouraged to perform your best.
And, the REAL UN is a massive competition! It's hidden behind a very thin veil of diplomacy, but it's nations backstabbing one another, etc, for supremacy. Since we don't have our respective nations' interests at stake in MUN, we should have some other form of motivation, like the possibility of recognition for a college transcript and whatnot. |

| the ideal is to get a BA in either Economics or PolySci while either double majoring or minoring (depending on the school) in Chinese Language and Literature. After that, I'm not sure. Maybe law? |

"Colleges do not give a flip if you were a member of a simulative experience and you were terrible at it!"
But you don't need to win to be best in something.
"Winning mechanisms allow those who are good to be recognized for it. That's why Policy and LD debate are very influential in college acceptance"
And why do you need to win? Why can't the colleges themselves organize the debates and see you? It's even better because know exactly how good you are. |

"I'm at the exact opposite of the spectrum as you. I can't stand competition. I had to quit policy debate because of that. It was just so arbitrary."
So your a loser, and a sore one at that, and by default you have to make sure no one else shares your losing streak by making sure they can't win or lose? |
