Do you care to say why? Not asking for help, for some kids, means not understanding the material that is being taught. Which means failing. Which means not getting a quality education. Which means poverty. ___________________________
Sadly I don't think this is an exclusivley working class ailment. My job is tutoring upper class kids, and good holy lord, teenage culture today is a huge steaming pile of anti-intellectual crap. They're so focused on useless things.
For example, the boy I tutor has memorized all of the "commentary" in Madden 11. He can guess by the play he ran, the teams, and the outcome of the play what the game will say. But try to get him to do basic y=mx+b and he quits right away because "it's too hard".
Cars are not necessary. Nor is college. You can go to technical school and get a well paying job. ____________________________
Met a pharmacy-bro while getting my NSAIDs who graduated from the technical course in my school, and is currently the highest paid employee at the CVS. He uses the money to pay his way through college. |

Zct. Saying all the things I want to but sometimes don't know how. ________________________
They don't know what it's like to "want". True want, the want you feel for basic needs.
Poverty works magic for some people, it really does, |

I'm concerned about anti-intellectualism in all classes, also. School reform ftw ___________________
You can reform schools all you want, but it's cultural. These kids look up to popular musicians. Said musicians can't even use proper grammar, enunciation, or sentence structure.
I hope it does. But for other's it's a neverending cycle. ____________________
It depends on the parents. Immigrants usually instill some sort of a work ethic in their kids. In other cases..... well lets just say you can tell by the child whether or not their parent is a "welfare queen". Nothing wrong with welfare, but those who abuse the system grow up quite lazy, |

But I believe you can reform the school system in a way to counter anti intellectualism. I don't know how, but I'm working on it. _______________
What do you have so far?
Personally I think that if we want our kids to learn a foreign language we should start teaching them in Kindergarten. Trying to pound Spanish into non-hispanic American teens is like trying to invade Russia during the winter. |

What my teacher does is put up a question on the board which has no "yes or no" answer. It is your opinion solely. Then he has the class pretty much debate it over the entire class. He does interject a lot, often to clarify things or to press people on their arguments. But it's extremely effective. _____________________
You'd have to get past the whole "Parental authority" crap first, but that's actually great. You'd need pretty competent teachers to do this, because if they aren't "strong" enough kids will walk out with alot of bias in certain subjects. Then again you can't do this in say, Biology. Or math.
The only problem I see with this is that it's pretty much "in or out". Either you grew up with this, or you didn't and it wouldn't make sense to grand-father in older students. It would have to start when they are just old enough to comprehend viewpoints. |

The teenage culture of today just goes to show that Victorian Era sweat shops need to return.
Hell, I read about some kid earlier who digs cold for a jar of dirt, and he is just happy to be working.
A jar. of. dirt.
Johnny depp is jelly. |
