(Foreword to the moderators: this challenge has been approved by Telamon, via Twitter, as an exception to the "No Contests" rule.)

My group, GUI Games (http://www.roblox.com/Groups/group.aspx?gid=261782), is sponsoring a GUI scripting contest. The winner of the contest, selected by me and two other judges, will be awarded a prize of 5000 Robux.

So, here is the challenge for entering: Create a 2D top-down GUI shooter/adventure.

That's essentially the only criteria. Please avoid all typical 3D parts, as this is a solely GUI contest. Eliminating the standard Roblox character is also highly recommended.

Everyone planning to enter is encouraged to get as creative as possible with this. Though these are *not* required, some elements you might include could be: bullet physics; bad guys; bad guys with guns; basic AI; collideable obstacles/objects; an inventory; puzzles; levels or scrolling terrain; upgrades; vehicles/vehicle physics; explosion effects; score system; etc.

Remember, none of these elements are required; they are only possible suggestions to get you thinking.

Contest Rules:

1. In order to be considered, all users submitting an entry must be members of the GUI Games group. You may join the group at any time—up until the end of the contest—and still be considered. No bias will be given to longer-term members.

2. All entries must be complete by midnight (Eastern Time) of Sunday, November 20th. Final judging will begin the 21st. Place entries seen to be updated after this time will be disqualified. Should an update be absolutely necessary, developers may contact me, via PM, with reasons as to why further updates were necessitated. Disqualification will then be at the judges’ discretion.

3. In order to submit a place, you must Private Message me (Vitos) with a link to your entry. All entries must be openly playable places; models will not be considered. If publishing space is an issue, entries may be posted on an alternate account. Should this entry win, the prize (and winner recognition) may be diverted to a main account upon request. You are encouraged to submit the link to your entry well before the deadline; this will help ensure your entry is recorded, and not missed in the mass of last-minute submissions. Final judging will not begin until after the 20th, so feel free to keep updating your place (even after you have submitted the link) up until the deadline.

4. I, along with two other judges (who will not be publicly named until after the results are announced), will decide the winner of this competition. Our decision is final and non-negotiable.

5. The selected winner of the competition will be awarded (via donation-shirt) a sum of 5000 Robux. Other impressive entries, at the judges’ discretion, may be awarded an Honorable Recognition. These entries may receive (again at the judges’ discretion) between 500 and 1000 Robux in prize money (out of an additional potential prize fund of 5000 Robux).

6. In order to receive any prize money, the creator of a winning place must currently have Builder’s Club. After the winners are announced, developers not meeting this requirement will have one month to purchase Builder’s Club, so as to claim their prize. In case the prize, after one month, is still unclaimed, it will be awarded to the next applicable runner-up.

Good luck everyone, and I hope to see some awesome games, GUIs, and scripting!

If you have any broad contest questions, feel free to post them here (so that everyone may benefit from the answer) and I will reply as soon as possible.

For more place-specific questions, feel free to PM me, and again, I’ll reply as soon as possible.

Once more, good luck, and happy developing!

Hacky local parts shouldn't be considered in the contest.

@Sorcus: I'm not sure what you mean by side-scrolling. The terrain is free to scroll, but it does need to be top-down. Like The Helicopter Game or FallDown would not be applicable entries, but RPGs where the terrain scrolls with the character would be perfectly acceptable. I added the top-down specification because the range of potential entries having complete freedom would be too varied to competently compare and judge.

@Matt If you rotate the *GUIs* using pixel-based trig, then yes, that would be impressive. If you're using a brick, that's not GUI-based, and you're disqualified.

@Sorcus, it wasn't hacky. It looked as good as Roblox's GUIs, had more possibilities, and wasn't nearly as slow.

@Vitos, technically, those parts in front of the camera were GUIs :)

If it doesn't inherit from GuiBase, then it's no good, yes?

Doesn't matter. It uses a glitch. That's hacky. I wasn't commenting on its performance.

side-scrolling means the screen scrolls when you get to/near the edge, like in a 2D Mario game.

My main, ArceusInator, is banned right now so I joined with this account. Is that okay?

It doesn't use a glitch either, it just puts a part in front of the camera.

@Matt
Oh really Matt? I recall them being Graphical, but entirely lacking in 'User Interface.'

and @Anaminus
Describe what you want to use, or be more specific. Solely using something besides frames and gui buttons (EG anything from the GuiBase) certainly doesn't count you out, however.

@Slizerd: "If publishing space is an issue, entries may be posted on an alternate account. Should this entry win, the prize (and winner recognition) may be diverted to a main account upon request." That'll be fine.

@Slizard (again): In that case, side-scrollers will be just fine.

Also I don't see how side scrolling and top down approach are different that it actually makes it harder for the judges to choose a better game!

@Sorcus: So they aren't different? Idk. Both will be accepted though. And as for judging, I've got a good team: we'll be able to make the right decision, even if the variety (or lack of maybe?) does make it difficult. :)

"A GUI represents the information and actions available to a user through graphical icons and visual indicators such as secondary notation, as opposed to text-based interfaces, typed command labels or text navigation."

I don't see how my interface lacks any of these.

I'm going to try and make a decent entry. I have the perfect idea!

Oh, and I posted about this on the wall of the Scripting Helper group, so you might get a bit more entries. Hopefully.

So if something moved across some terrain, and the terrain moved to keep the object in the middle of the screen, is that side-scrolling?
