Well, you obviously can't speak the former if you don't know the plural to 'language'.

@LOLFATTYLOL

There's a possibility he was referring to American, Mexican, and Brazilian as dialects. Americans speak a differently from the British, for example they have different accents and the United States uses other words like "line" instead of "queue" and "football" instead of "rugby".

For the Spanish speaking countries, of course there's gotta be a difference. Listen to a Mexican speak in English, then listen to a Spaniard speak in English. They have different accents, therefore it's ok to assume their dialects are different. Same applies for Portuguese and Brazilian. They're the same languages, just different dialects, and I do not believe that guy was wrong by stating he could speak American, Mexican, and Brazilian.

@ Edmontonian

Yeah I know they're dialects, yet many people think "american, mexican, british, brazilian, etc.." are real languages.

I forgot to post which languages I can speak. I totally speak English as a first language. Since I live in a bilingual community that consists mainly of English and French, I'm able to read French that appears on stuff such as cereal boxes. I also took French during elementary and junior high, but I was never really paying attention. Nowadays, I can read some French, but I would never be able to speak it actually!

I tried self-studying German for a nearly a year. I got stuck on its extra long words and grammar. Don't get me started on that grammar. I kind of gave up on German. Like my ability to speak French, I really can't speak German, but I can read some stuff.

I'm learning Russian right now, and so far I'm amused how far I've gotten with it. I guess I could say those who said Russian was a hard language were wrong. Maybe they were just intimidated by the Cyrillic alphabet, but that alphabet didn't take any patience to learn, not at all! It has nearly the same amount of letters as the English language, and there are similarities between each alphabet. I don't think the alphabet would be as hard to learn as Arabic or Japanese, you know they both write a different way. Arabic writes from right to left, which is backwards to us. Japanese writes from above to below, which is downwards to us. Also, each have no similarities to our alphabet, and I know Japanese has a ton of different letter combinations.

@LOLFATTYLOL

Most people think those are actual languages? I hope not. When I was learning French in school, they called it French, and not Canadian or Quebecois. Of course, if one can speak another language, they would know the real name of it in their language. That's only logical.

I was thinking that maybe those people you were talking about knew that American was English, they just wanted to show nationalism by calling it American. Hopefully I'm right, because it's better to be a patriot than an ignorant person, in my opinion.

Now, anyone with a proper education would know, by the time the pass elementary school, that American, Canadian, and Mexican aren't languages! Or maybe your country has a bad style of education. Sorry.

I have never ever known anyone who said American, Canadian, Mexican, Brazilian, or British were a language, to be honest. Lucky me, I don't have to put up with such stupidity!
