| Ricardo Gonzalo Pedro Montalban y Merino was born on November 25th of 1920 in Mexico City, Mexico, but grew up in Torreon, Mexico by Ricarda Merino and Jenaro Montalban. Ricardo was raised as a Roman Catholic. His one sister and two brothers were also Roman Catholic, Carmen, Pedro, and Carlos. Ricardo moved to Los Angeles as a teen to live with his brother Carlos. The both of them then moved to NYC in 1940, where Ricardo earned one of his first minor role in "Her Cardboard Lover". In 1941 Ricardo learned his mother was dying, so he returned to Mexico. There he had acted in a dozen Spanis-Language films and became a star in Mecixo. In 1943 when Montalban arrive in Hollywood the studio wanted to change his name to Ricky Martin. Instead, He shortnened his name to Ricardo Montalban. Far later in 1975 he became the spokesman for the new Chrysler Cordoba. The car became quite successful. He was noted to very much like the "soft Corinthian Leather". Ricardo was best known for his role as Mr. Roarke in "Fantasy Island" which he played from 1978 to 1984. The TV series was one of the most popular on TV. Another of his well known roles was as Khan Noonien Singh in 1967 in the episode "Space Seed" of "Star Trek The Original Series", then in the 1982 filk "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan". Ricardo also apeard in the "Family Guy" episode "McStroke" as a genetically engineered cow. During the 1951 film "Across the Wide Missouri" Montalban was thrown from his horse, knocked unconscious, and trampled by another horse. Thus resulting in a painful nack injury that never healed. The pain increased as he aged, and in 1993, Montalban underwent Nine and a half hours of spinal surgery which left him paralysed below the waist and using a wheelchair. Despite constant pain, the actor persevered: he performed and provided voices for animated forms and supported his Nosotros foundation. In "Spy Kids" a role was made just for him as "Grandfather Valentin" Who aslo had to use a wheelchair. Ricardo won an Emmy Award in 1978 for his role in "How the West Was Won", and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild in 1993. He continued to act in his 80s, most popular for his appearance as "Grandfather Valentin" in "Spy Kids" as said above. |
