It's on the Transcontinental Railway, and I am not allowed to do anything before I finish. Almost done anyway :/
The Transcontinental Railway was a massive railway that was being built in 1863. The Railway would cross the entire United States, connecting the east coast to the west coast. The Railway took about six and a half years to build, and it required many workers and resources to build. When the Railway was done, it brought many economic, social, and technological changes to the U.S. The Transcontinental Railway had a significant economical impact on the United States. When the Railway was first being built, it required many workers and many companies. This offered jobs to many immigrants, who were often not allowed to get a factory job. The people who had the most effect, however, were the Chinese. The Railway started off financially troubled and lacking workers. Chinese workers were suggested, and they were soon being hired. The Railway companies were able to hire many Chinese, since most were being paid a very small amount. Still, they worked hard constructing the rails, and often risked their lives while doing it. "Without the efforts of the Chinese workers in the building of America's railroads, our development and progress as a nation would have been delayed by years. Their toil in severe weather, cruel working conditions and for meager wages cannot be under appreciated," as said by Hon. John T. Doolittle of California in the U.S House of Representatives, Thursday, April 29, 1999. The Railway workers had to lay down steel rails, and this required them to clear paths to put the rails down. They often had to get through mountains or steep hills. Because of the huge demand for steel rails, steel companies prospered. Once the Railway was completed, it helped many other businesses. The east and west had different resources. The east prospered in things the west did not have, and vice versa. The Transcontinental Railway allowed businesses to send their products to the other side of the country, where the product could be much higher in demand. If the west was lacking in cattle, eastern farmers could send their products to the west. Unfortunately, this meant that the producers could make their product whatever price they wanted to, but consumers would still be forced to buy it. Another downside was that the railroad companies got to choose the price of sending goods, and they did not have to make it consistent. So railroad companies were charging people different prices for sending their goods, and often overpriced the railroad services. Some companies paid very little for large shipments, when many farmers had to pay much more to send small loads. The Transcontinental Railway also had significant social impacts on the United States. One of the most major social impacts was the constant expansion of towns, cities, and states. The western states were originally not very populated compared to others, because of the extreme difficulty getting there and the difficulty living there. It would take weeks to get to the west, and you would have limited supplies. It was common to run into natural problems, like storms and obstructions like mountains. Once you got to the west, there was limited food and resources. You wouldn't have much of your own resources left, either. You would also have difficult work. On top of this all, there were no laws to ensure safety. Once you got there, you were usually stuck. After the Transcontinental Railway was built, it made travel to the west much faster and safer. It would only take days to get from one coast to another. You could also bring more supplies with you. The people arriving in the west caused towns to expand much faster and last like that. It also brought law to the west.
