Felipe Massa's qualifying accident in the 2009 Hugnarian Grand Prix, when a spring hit him in the helmet and fractured his skull.
Henry Surtees in an open-wheel race at Brands Hatch in 2009 or 2010, killed by a wheel that hit his head.
Dan Wheldon in the Las Vegas Indy 300 this year. Blunt head trauma from hitting a catchfence.
Ayrton Senna in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. His death is believed by many to have been caused by a wheel hitting his head.
Tom Pryce in 1977. Partially decapitated by a fire extinguisher that a track marshal he accidentally ran over was carrying. Obviously the track marshal died too, and died in an even more disturbing way.
Helmut Koinigg in the 1975 United States Grand Prix. Decapitated by a barrier.
All of these. Head injuries. |

He did.
Then a wheel appeared to hit him in the head. That might have been what caused the death. |

Well, no duh they were mostly head related...that's pretty much the only part of the body that is outside of the main car, even though they had the seat behind them.
So, it's kind of obvious that would be the most common way to die.... |

| Yeah. It is very dangerous. I mean their whole head is exposed. They need to fix this to stop deaths. |

| It would look kind of strange if they enclosed the cars. but it would make it safer. |
