PROBLEM: Explosions.

Sparkles.

Smoke.

Fire.

Whatever else they added during my many-month hiatus.

What do these all have in common? They're all particle effects, two-dimensional decals used to show something that would normally be difficult to simulate on a three-dimensional block-based game like this one. However, they have their limitations.


There are only four(?) of them.


What about users who want to simulate more than just an explosion, sparkly items, smoke, fire, or whatever else they added? What if users want to create their own particle effect so scripting won't have to play a part in it?

SOLUTION: Allow users to create their own particle effects!

Basically, the Roblox developers use the same system they used to create the particle effects the Roblox community knows and loves today. However, instead of having just one specific type of emitter and specific type of emission, there are multiple types, accessible via a drop-down menu, like you'd see in the properties of any block, mesh, particle effect, script, etc. etc. A few examples of emitter/emissions are:

-Rise (smoke)

-Fountain (sparkles)

-Expand-contract (explosions/fire)

-Just staying there (tree leaves)

Also, instead of one specific type of particle, a user can just use any of his/her decals, or a decal in the Public Domain. This would work in about the same way as the skybox works.

THE POSSIBILITIES: With user-generated particle effects, the possibilities for games would be endless. Imagine actually being able to see the wind; being able to watch the water move. Imagine lava that doesn't look like two decals poorly scripted to look like a lava flow. And this is just the beginning. Having user-created particle effects could very well change the building world of Roblox.

Already though of this... Looks like people just ignored it.

Anyways, I would also like it if Roblox optimized the existing Particled. I would like it when smoke would not need a higher RiseVelocity to increase the rate at which the smoke particle appears.

No. All of what you said is scriptable. Also, users would have to script the particles anyways in order to make them :/

@Nickolodeon: Make a script that remakes the Sparkles, Explosion, Fire, and Smoke objects, and they must all look good, work perfectly, and not lag. Otherwise, your argument is invalid. c:

Learning to script in Lua is not hard at all. I wrote a guide that can help (it's not finished yet, partly because the wiki won't let me edit stuff without throwing an error).

It's not so much a younger kid cannot learn it, rather, no explains it to them. Yet, 8 years can script, let alone I taught myself in the Middle School

No need to add user particle effects, after all, it would flood Roblox with useless stuff! Think a bit, Roblox pays for storage! (1 TB HDD = 23 dolars xD)

Now imagine the needless lag for a decent, scripted user-made particle effect.

@Maxim (seriously hoping the filter doesn't block this)

I don't see how user-created particle effects are useless. And it'd take up as much data as any other particle effect.
