Who's it aimed at?
-Builders who want to build won't use it because they want to make it all by themselves.
-It all looks the same. sure, there will be more hills in one than another, but unless someone completely destroys it, they're all going to look similar. Not memorable, and people will complain that they used terrain, just like they do with free models - it will probably become overused in most places.
-Everyone starting Roblox will want to use it, because it looks cool. Most people who start Roblox won't be able to run the terrain because whatever you say, it's slow. while generating, mine drops to 20 fps, and I'm using a gtx 580 graphics card, and the camera is noticeably slower moving around.
-Everyone who has already created places on Roblox and is experienced won't want ot use it because as I said, they will want to create their own cool stuff from scratch.
I would think that if a popular places made, say, a hill made with terrain and stuck it in their war place - as long as it was heavily customized to make sure it would fit, which is one of the main problems with it at the moment - then having destructible terrain would be pretty cool.
Terrain - that is, having a hill with x million blocks which is completely destructible - if cool. Terrain generation - making an entire place our of the plugin's lua coded generation script - is not. I hope the terrain system is going to be updated as if people weren't going to create entire places out of rolling, half-block-half-smooth hills, because places like this *will* become what places with free models are at the moment: generally disliked.
Thoughts?

| tl;dr: Terrain system is cool. Places made out of entirely script generated terrain won't be, shouldn't be, and Roblox should encourage them not to be. |

| It's more a starting point; the idea being whatever game you want to build you can now build on top of whatever you get from terrain generation. It's pretty much the equivalent of a baseplate for terrain. It's a useful thing to start with, but if that's all you have in your game... well, then it's not much of a game. |

| If, say, five places on the front page all have the baseplate for their place as a randomly generated terrain, and then it would become repetitive. They way terrain is formatted at the moment, it's extremely difficult to create a good looking place on top of the existing terrain that actually fits with it. Unless you flatten a huge area, you can't really build the main part of a place on top of it due to the weirdly smoothed parts. |

Might I just ask something about this? I have a 2008 Asus Eee PC 901, with 1.6GHz Processor and 2GB, and before I put Ubuntu 11.10 on here I had Windows XP. I still had it when Terrain came out, and normally, it was at 20FPS. I generated some terrain, and it was 20FPS. I flew a plane, bombing as I went. 20FPS (Except when I crashed). I only find an issue when generating huge terrain, when it takes about 2 minutes, but 10 seconds after generation it was fine. The Graphics was an Intel GMA 950 (?), but I was wondering which settings you used to get those speeds? |

| Maximum I ever got it up to, even on my 3.4GHz dual core desktop/server, was 30FPS, on an empty baseplate. |

@iOYUS
But that would be trillions of voxels! o_o |

The Terrain is for many lazy people. I've seen many front page games which DON'T have any point in them.

| Yeah, the destructible terrain is good, but can you use it - or if you can, are there features that directly support this - without generating an entire level? |

| I dont like it because its very limited. You cant create rotated ground and i dont think you can change the size of 1 voxel. |

@Pighead the popularity for terrain is places that you can dig in. So I can't wait till we can make our own terrain block textures so i can add objects into it and make a survival game. No, not miencrafte!

| I made a cool cavern a hole in the ground, then used crater underneath the hole to make it bigger and then covered the top with ground to make a dungeon. :)> |
