My name is Private Charles Miller. This is my story.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“The USSR is dropping soviet paratroopers into D.C!” I screamed! “What?” “They launched a surprise attack on the US! They’re going for the capitol!” “Get to the humvee! MOVE!” I made quick, fluid movements to get my gear on, and sprinted to the Humvee. When I got to the Humvee I floored it before Sergeant Anderson could even close the door. I’m secretly thinking to myself, December, 31st 2024. The day the USSR cracked. The Humvee was fast moving and we got there in less than 10 minutes, which felt like hours, but it was much worse than we had predicted. US army men lay on the ground with their soviet adversaries. Not to mention it was snowing at the time, making a bloody red snow slurp. But I had no time for sympathy; I rushed out of the humvee with my M16 and blasted everything in a red camo uniform. A bullet grazed my left arm sending a shock of pain, forcing me to grasp it with my free hand. I couldn’t stand the pain of a direct hit so I shouted at the Sergeant, “Were taking too much fire! We need cover!” “There’s a ditch up ahead, Move it!” screamed Sergeant Anderson. I hauled it to the ditch and then the smell hit me of decaying bodies. Try to imagine the worst thing you ever smelled, but 10 times worse, And even then, it’s an understatement. As much as I fired, And as many as I killed, it didn’t seem to matter as wave after wave of them flooded around us. We were immediately surrounded and outnumbered in this claustrophobic road ditch. If we didn’t get help soon, we would be as helpless as the men that lay ahead of us. Sergeant ducked and radioed in an Apache. The Pilot responds within a few seconds, “We will be there ETA four minutes. Hold off until I get there.” “Over Apache 3-1” Four minutes doesn’t sound like much? It did to me when you have hundreds upon hundreds of soviets out to see that you wont take another breath. Out of ammo and out of luck, I felt it was the end and hid behind the shallow ditch. Finally, the Apache reached us and rained mini lightning bolts on the buggers. I was relieved, until I saw a yellow explosion by the contact of an RPG, obliverating the Apache that was supposed to save us. The smell of gasoline mixed with bodies made me horrificaly noxious. Anderson hadn't seen what had just happened. So I shouted at him, “They shot down our heli!” Sergeant still couldn’t hear me from the machine gun fire. “Sergeant! They shot down the heli!” I knew he heard me this time, but didn’t know what to say. “And I’m out of ammo!” He tossed me a half empty magazine. “Make it count.” Anderson was short, sweet, and to the point, nothing more. I picked off a few more, not knowing if we’ll make it back alive. Just as I fired my last shot, friendly Humvees appeared from behind me. The enemies I was having difficulties with went down like dominoes, splatting with blood before they hit the ground. Anderson grabbed me to signal that we need to move. I got in the Humvee exhausted from the incident I have just underwent. “Drive back to base.” Said Anderson. Although it was the same 10 minutes coming here it felt more like 10 seconds. I got out of the humvee walking towards base, and out of the corner of my eye I saw more Soldiers coming back. I ask one of the soldiers, “What happened?” “They retreated into the capitol building. We couldn’t do much more after that.” He sounded a bit annoyed and frustrated to answer. Anderson said, “Get into the base. We have an announcement from the Pentagon.” I was tired as it is, but I went any way, respecting the men who just died for our country. I entered base with just over 25 troops, including me, my squad, and Andorson. I sat down in the 2nd to last row. Some sort of high rank I never met was at the podium. He began to speak. "Hello fellow soldiers, as you know, the USSR has launched a surprise attack as an act of war. They have temporairly captured the US Capitol building, and we have reports of a bomb like item being brought into it. If it goes off we will lose all of the US capitol building, and all the lives inside it. You task is to retake the Capitol building, and disarm any weapon/bomb you aquire. Get to your Humvees." We slowly crawled out of the room and out of the base toward our Humvees. We drove back to the place I barely made out alive of. We go as far as we can on the Humvee before we start taking fire. We rush out to a improvised sandbag wall cover. Before I even let off a bullet, the capitol burst into a flaming explosion, decimating the capitol and all that where in a 50 yard radius, including their own men. Anderson burst a gasket. "Crap! Craap! We lost the Capitol! The US Capitol is gone!" He sat dazing into the ground with a depressed demeanor on his face. I picked up the radio mic, an operator from base picked up. "The capitol is gone. Its all gone." "...." "Get reinforcements!" "This isnt the base. We are retreating, we were already informed." "So were all alone? Your just going to leave us here?" "Im sorry. But we need to regroup with people of other places. We dont have the man power to stay." I hung up the radio. Soviet personnel surrounded us. I said to Anderson, "Theres no reinforcements. There retreating and we are the only ones out here. Come on Sergeant! We have a war to fight!" "Fine." He picked up his rifle and looked in 360 degrees. "We are, completly surrounded. Get back to back." Just then one of my comrades was hit in the head, brain matter sprayed from behind and he collapsed. "Man down! Man down!" two of the other remaining soldiers got to our backs. We made our last and final magazine count. I felt unstopable until my M16 was out, then the other 2 men were out, and Anderson was out. I screamed, "Draw your sidearms! We need to make the final push!" Before I drew my side arms I just scanned the terrain, it was patched with freezing bodies. There was so much death. Some die as our enemie. Some die Unknown. But me? I will die a hero. All four of us simultaniously charged in opposite derections, guns blazing and out of our minds, this truely was the last push. We all let out our finally battle cry. "Ahhhhhhhhhh!" echoed between the four of us. A bullet blasted my thigh, and then one hit my stomach and I collapsed. My last sights were the other three men laying on the ground before I saw light and walked toward it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Hello and thank you all for coming, I am Colonel Michael Smith Jr. I have come to recognize a hero of the Army. His name is Private Charles Miller. He is not with us today sadly; he gave his life for the well being of his country. He sacrificed himself, so that you and me can be here today. Because without him holding the soviets off, we would have never been able to regroup and fend off the Soviet Invasion and rebuild. Without him we would have no capitol, and would have costed more lives. Today he is to reap two medals that rightfully go to him. We award him with the Purple Heart Medal," -Thunderous applause roars through the auditorioum- "And the Medal of Honor! The Medal of Honor is a Medal awarded by the President of the United States himself! -More applause- "Thank you, thank you. This will be the end of the program." They audience chit-chatted for 5 minutes before leaving. Then the janitors came to sweep the floors |
