Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have landed in Libya just weeks after Colonel Gaddafi was ousted from power.
The pair are set to have talks with leaders of the National Transitional Council (NTC) in Tripoli before flying to Benghazi, where they are expected to deliver a speech in Liberty Square.
Mr Cameron is expected to announce Britain will deploy a UK military team to advise the NTC on security, return Libyan assets totalling £500 million and make 50 places available in British specialist hospitals for critically ill Libyans.
They are the first leaders from countries which took part in this year's Nato-led military operations to visit Libya.
Meanwhile, fighting continues around remaining strongholds of the Gaddafi regime.
Both Mr Cameron and Mr Sarkozy are popular in Libya as they are credited with helping to prevent Muammar Gaddafi crushing the uprising in Benghazi and creating the conditions for the rebels to fight their way to Tripoli.
The leaders spearheaded the drive for the United Nations Security Council resolution 1973 in March, which authorised the use of Nato force to protect civilians in Libya against Gaddafi's forces. |
